here you go lads save derailing single barrels thread again !

tell us about your boats and how you used them !

i started when we moved down devon 20 years back tried for a change of life style( but now returned to the old one) ! first boat was a treeve 16' that was used for inshore reef fishing and trolling for bass, pollack and mackeral along the east devon coast ,then the bug got hold bad and wanted something to get to the mid channel wreaks (grass always greener) so built a tremlett 21 offshore racing hull into a fast offshore fisher ! then progressed to a bayliner trophy ,unfortunately health failed now so had to give them up but many happy times and many fish ! i will dig some pics out from the hard drive tomorrow and put them up

YAY, well done Devon, as you probably all know already, I am refurbish a Wilson 24 from the hull up, purely for my own pleasure, love sea fishing and been out the briney, know what you mean about offshore wrecks Devon, that's part of the reason I moved up to 24 foot, that and the mid channel sandbanks that hold the turbot !

I mainly drift wrecks for cod, pollock and bass, winter bait fishing for cod, mackerel, got a few pots I put out when the time and place is right.

Can't seem to get any pics up on here, but I have a computer full of my boats and fish !

quite a few of my pics need scanning first "pre digital" ill have a shot at sorting some out tomorrow,i used to enjoy the inshore trolling myself with a sandeel and the drifting over the wreaks ,always got a buz from the sounder when the wreak started to come up with the anticipation of the fish !

Never really tried trolling, too much specialist gear to do the job right, lead core lines and such, drifting sandeels certainly floats my boat though.

We have a real rocky bay not far from my mooring, and nowt better than drifting across it with a live jack or sandeel, some real nice bass in there and when they hit its like a train taking off, always gets the ticker going

Fished on a Wilson 24 a few times, beam to narrow for me. Yet my boat was a Wilson 17 and loved it. go figure?

TC

No, I know exactly what you mean, I had a 17 as well, and I have always said the 24' and the 23's for that matter could have done with been at least a foot bigger in beam, they actually feel narrow compared to the 17, so I know exactly what your saying.

I picked mine up for a song, and I do mean it was too good to be true, I just couldn't say no.

Not just the freedom, although it's about the one thing in this country that's pretty unlicensed, it don't half make you feel good when all the hours of hard work pay off and you fill the freezer from a mark you found.

I was on the other end. I dived. When you guys were doing you thing with rods and lines, I was down there, in the murky depths, still doing a bit of fishing, albeit with a lobby hook and a crab bag. Never had a problem other than when on Chesil and was hooked. The guy must have thought he had a whale. The other most memorable times, other than Northern France, would have to be the Farne Islands. When I had my own boat we did regular trips there and to tell the truth, you can't explain just how good it is. To dive with the seals, to dive the gulleys and to dive through the middle of huge drafts of fish is quite amazing. I've been on the bottom of a lot of places and can honestly say that if you guys could only see what goes on down there among the wrecks, you'd be amazed.

Jealous, jealous, jealous, always fancied trying my hand at diving, don't think I would fancy been hooked though.

We have a code, we fish the wrecks when tide is running, then at slack the dive boats normally arrive, flag up, =diver down, we stop fishing for an hour, it's not productive fishing over slack anyway

I can understand that. Fish are quirky. They are totally different with the tides and you can see that when down there. However, when you are on/in the plates of the wrecks it's a different game. If only I could show you the amount of tackle lost on the wrecks you'd be staggered. My mate and I wondered, as one does whilst having an after dive pint, how much value the gear that we could have brought to the surface? In the end though it was all about the sheer quality and Beauty of the surroundings we were in. I nearly lost my life on a deep dive but thanks to training and the most professional care of fellow diver Tony Briggs am still here. It's a wonderful place down there. Jok.

Yeah, no messing around down there, I would imagine it takes a lot of nerve to stay calm and cool, anyone who dives has my respect.

I can imagine how much gear must be on the wrecks, the average lure would be a couple of quid each ! The secret is knowing when the wreck is approaching and how high to wind up to miss it, yet stay close enough to be amongst the fish, and be sure to drop back down as soon as the wreck has passed to be in the scour downside, a favourite fish holding spot.

Oh we are going to have some conversations. I look forward to it and any other company we'll have. Remember me to the Kimmeridge levels when we meet. The best, fast diving I've ever encountered. 7/8 knots at about a metre above the seabed trying to collect crabs. Fantastic.

Got a 16ft "ranna batten" and a 12ft sib at the moment, both handy sizes to take camping wherever we go in the camper. I've had a few canal cruisers, and a cjr, lots of little fibreglass dingies to piss about on and my dad and I are looking at getting something a bit more serious (in the 30+ft region) for some off-shore stuff this year, I want to build and he wants to buy so we will see what happens ;)
