It keeps you one step in front of those who haven't got it. I did electrical engineering working shifts and did the BTEC, HNC, HND and then got promoted to electrical project engineer on days with a good wage. Love it

What sort of work do you do as a project engineer? Im a electrical project engineer in construction. Basically check and manage design, then procure and technically vet supply or subcontract packages, once all the orders are placed its then just managing the instalation to meet programme and checking quality etc. Obviously that is a very condensed version of events! Its mental 90% of the time, not feet up like all the lads on the tools think(including me a few years ago!). I enjoy my job but want to move on to PM level. looked after a couple over the last year and they did well so I have pushed for it to be official and I think it may be happening in March. That is why I dont think the HND will benefit me, I am moving away from engineering into PMing and our company are registered to deliver management training to NVQ level 7 so just guna go down that route. I have worked my way up from an apprentice where I am and we are a big multi national company not a small outfit so have gained the experience and also have the backing of the bosses so dont feel the need for the HND. I may come a cropper if I was ever laid off though but hopefully if that ever comes I will have enough experience on my CV.

What sort of work do you do as a project engineer? I basically work along side of the mechanical engineer / director they tell me what they want and i design my part to make there part work. The plant is old which I manage, I am slowly updating the plant from old to new designing circuits researching new equipment. I also once fully designed build it with the team I manage can't stand sitting in an office all day It's a love/hate job some days I love it others I hate it. Get as many qualifications you can they all help somewhere along the line. Even though half of the courses work are never needed.
