Conjunctivtis

The only problem with Isathal, formerly known as Fucithalmic ointment is that it contains an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections. It should only be used when there is a bacterial infection, and be used as directed: similar to an oral course of antibiotics. Using it just occasionally for a day or so can lead to bacterial resistance.

As a daily or frequent eye cleaner salt water would be better, or something like Goldeneye which is available from a chemist and is used for minor irritations, inflammation etc.

just had look , the drops for the acute for C/B looks about the best , carnt see the prices though .

Optrex is a big no no as it's a local anithesic and just numbs the eye and does not cure anything, skycat has said the stuff to use and it ain't called golden eye for nothing and a lot of bird lads use it for eye ailments as well

:hmm:Optrex infected eyes eye drops and eye ointment both contain the active ingredient chloramphenicol, which is a type of medicine called an antibiotic. Antibiotics are used to treat infections caused by bacteria. (NB. Chloramphenicol eye drops and ointment are also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine.)

Chloramphenicol is known as a broad-spectrum antibiotic, which means it is effective against infections caused by a wide variety of bacteria.

Chloramphenicol works by preventing bacteria from producing proteins that are essential to them. Without these proteins the bacteria cannot grow, replicate and increase in numbers. Chloramphenicol therefore controls the numbers of bacteria causing an infection, and the remaining bacteria die or are killed by the body's immune system. This treats the infection.

Chloramphenicol is administered into the eye to treat a type of eye infection called bacterial conjunctivitis, which can be caused by various types of bacteria. Putting the medicine directly into the eye allows the chloramphenicol to act directly on the bacteria that are causing the infection.

Optrex is good stuff and certainly doesn't "just numb the eye" ?

Optrex infected eye is designed to combat conjunctivitis, conjunctivitis is a bacterial infection of the eye. it develops when the body can not produce enough antibodies to fight the infection itself, antibiotics are the only thing that will help until the body makes enough of its own antibodies. no other creams or washes that don't contain antibiotic with do sweet FA. if its just dirt then wash it out but if the eye looks blueish in the center then its defiantly infected. if its just bloodshot in the whites the it could be just dust/grass seed or any other foreign body, it may even be an allergy but you need to understand the difference and when or not to use an antibiotic, uncleaned eyes will almost certainly lead to an infection.

Goldeneye, or general contact lens solution. It's ph balanced, sterile and comes in various sized bottles depending where you buy it. If you know anyone who's on monthly lenses they usually get shit loads of solution as part of the package, ask nicely and get the spare stuff.

It's bloody good gear for lads in the terrier game too! ;)

As most of you know Tilly had half a tree in her eye for months so I have used practically every eye drop and ointment known to man and beast and plain old salt water was as good as any of the shop bought stuff .......
