IRELAND's LARGEST WORKING DOG WEEKEND : The 28th ANNUAL ALL IRELAND TERRIER, WHIPPET and LURCHER CHAMPIONSHIPS at the IRISH GAME FAIR 27th & 28th JUNE

The 28th Annual All Ireland Terrier & Lurcher Show and Racing Championships is being staged at the Irish Game Fair, Shanes Castle on Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th June. It is SPONSORED BY Irish Countrysports and Country Life magazine, CAI - Countryside Alliance Ireland, Feedwell, Gardiner Bros Jewellers, Barbour, Red Mills, Jaydee Coats & Whippet Supplies and John Humphries. The championships are organised by Working Dog Director Tom Barry and the Irish Working Terrier Federation.

PLEASE NOTE: Only the Master McGrath Race is pre entry. All other events are enter on the day in order that our All Ireland Champions can be true Champions of Ireland having beaten ALL COMERS on the day.

RACING SATURDAY 27th June starts 12.00noon with the RED MILLS Master Mc Grath Final to find the fastest lurcher in the UK and Ireland

The winner receives £400 Rosette, The ANTIQUE Master McGrath Plate to keep, a bronze Lurcher Trophy and a bag of RED MILLS and holds the Philip Lawton Memorial Trophy for one year. The runner up receives a £100 Voucher from Smyths of Coleraine a Trophy, rosette and a bag of RED MILLS.

Both winner and runner up receive a presentation coat for their dog sponsored by Jaydee Coats and Whippet Supplies.

All qualifiers receive a special qualifiers limited edition cap

All qualifiers for the Master McGrath Final must have their completed forms returned to Albert Titterington irishgamefair@btinternet.com before the 16th June. They must all register on the day with David Titterington at Game Fair HQ by 11.00am when they will receive their Master McGrath Qualifying Cap.

The 28th ALL IRELAND CHAMPION TERRIER, LURCHER & WHIPPET SHOW sponsored by NUTTS Sunday 28th start 12.00 noon with pet show and 1.00 sharp for breed classes.

OVERALL SHOW CHAMPION Barbour Coat, £50 and Rosette and a presentation coat for the dog sponsored by Jaydee Coats and Whippet Supplies.

CHAMPION TERRIER, LURCHER & WHIPPET receive special bronze trophies to keep plus £50 & BAG OF NUTTS & Rosette. The Champion Lurcher receives a portrait of the dog by john Humphries.

The Champion Lurcher and Terrier qualify for the Red Mills Irish Countrysports and Country Life magazine Five Nations International Lurcher and Terrier Finals at Birr Castle on the 30th August and the Countryman's weekly Champion of Champion Contest. They also receive two tickets to the Birr Castle Fair and a year's subscription to Irish Countrysports and Country Life magazine. The Prize fund for the Red Mills Irish Countrysports and Country Life competition prestigious finals will be c €1,000.

JUDGED BY A THREE JUDGE SYSTEM WILL TAKE PLACE IN THE MAIN ARENA AT 5.30pm on Sunday 28th June. WILL ALL QUALIFIERS REGISTER WITH FAIR HQ BEFORE 12.00 noon. The Winner of the Five Nations Whippet Championship will receive a variety of prizes including £400; a special bronze trophy to keep and a bag of Feedwell and a presentation coat for the dog sponsored by Jaydee Coats and Whippet Supplies

In case of any confusion it is the NI Countrysports Fair that has relocated NOT the GAME FAIR. THE GAME FAIR will be bigger and better than ever at its normal superb venue of Shanes Castle, Antrim on the 27th & 28th June.

Looking forward to it Albert, just looking at class ten in the racing would it not be possible to have hairy dog racing as a separate class as, having collie cross running in the class would lead to 7/8 greyhounds 1/8 collies running against hairy dogs

 

I think this is for genuinely 'hairy dogs' but I'll raise this with our Director Tom Barry.

And our best wishes for your show PL- there is great variety between the two events giving everyone with a working dog two great opportunities to have a bit of craic.

Rather than have a spat on the forum on the thread for the Gilford Club's Show I have decided to deal with the rather ill informed post by Huntandfish attacking me for clarifying that when PL mentioned the game fair relocating to Scarva that he meant the NI Countrysports Fair and not the Irish Game Fair which will of course take place at Shanes Castle on the 27th & 28th June. From the anonymity of his alias Huntandfish went on to launch a tirade against me " "the generic terms of Game Fair and Game and Country are not copyrighted. If they were then no doubt someone would have brought legal action instead of appearing petty and ill mannered and typing endless rants about it. No one cares if Moira/ Scarva Shanes Castle Ballywalter or Birr are referred to as Game fairs or country sports fairs or Game and Country."

 

To put this person straight I make no apology for making clarification about our event when there could have been confusion AND it should be made clear that 'Irish Game Fair' and 'Irish Game and Country Fair' are not only our well established brand names but are registered trademarks. Over the 36 years of our fairs we have spent a great deal of money and effort on promoting these brands and trademarks. We do have the right in law to protect both brands and trademarks but, to date, have chosen not to do so - although our patience on this has been sorely tried by another event organiser appearing to wish to cause confusion by registering on twitter as 'irishgamefair' and actually attempting to register our brand name and trademark 'Irish Game and Country Fair' as his trademark. I suppose HuntandFish thinks this sort of behaviour is not petty or ill mannered but very sporting and quite acceptable. We would simply prefer other event organisers to promote their events under their own brand names rather than using terms which could cause confusion with ours and we genuinely can see no good reason why they would want to do otherwise.

Final lot of trophies arrived today - so we now have some superb trophies to keep for the top winners and all race and show class winners also get a trophy plus a 15Kg bag of dog food.

 

Plus as you can see unrivalled prizes throughout at the premier working dog event in Ireland.

can you not get hairy dogs that are 7/8s greyhound ???

can you not get hairy dogs that are 7/8s greyhound ???

 

Chid, The race organisers will make the decision on the day about what way this race should be run.

      The Burren Charity Working Dog Show and Raceday Saturday 26th July 25   From the Pen of Margaret Mc Stay   As the clock on the wall jingled out its usual dulcet tones on Saturday morning, it signalled the start of a new day for us and another great sporting event on our country sports calendar. With Mrs Sat Nav being our guiding light along the way, and the beautiful Mourne Mountains following us enroute, very soon The Burren came into view and the dog show venue for the day. And what a venue that was. It was evident the amount of hard work the Burren Team had put into this show ground. It was in tiptop condition with six toilets on site, rings well spaced out and a superb racetrack with a very steep hill. And what a tester for our dogs this track was. With the sun shining down all day in abundance and a very large gathering of canine folk from North and South of the border, the atmosphere was electric. I can honestly say this was the biggest show I have been at this year and all for a great charity. As the day progressed I took a stroll around the many stands dotted around the field. I stopped of at Mick Mc Cormacks stand. Mick and Lorna are always so welcoming and have a stand full of everything for the hunting fraternity. Next door was flight & bite Outdoor Clothing & Footwear. I had a great we chat with owner Richard Caddell. Richard and I go back a very long time from our times at The Great Games Fairs of Ireland at Shanes Castle. I think most of our outdoor gear for dog shows were bought of this man over the years. You would not go hungry at this show. Burgers/Drinks/ Snacks/Teas and coffee were all available on site. The children had a field day with a child handling class. Every child got a medal and a bag full of goodies. With their barking and crooning canine friends by their sides, these little people were in their happy place and full of winning spirit As the day progressed into evening, it was raffle time and then the excitement began. It is unbelievable the buzz of excitement the raffle generates to the people around the ring. There were some great items in the raffle, and some very happy campers going home with great prizes The Racing started at approximately 12 noon followed by Showing. Again this year Biddy, you and the boys, and you as a team excelled yourselves in everything you done on the day for the Burren Working Dog Charity Show and Club and many thanks for that. You have been so helpful to so many clubs North and South of the border over the years and long may it last. Finally, Finally this top show would not of been possible without this now well experienced and brilliant show organiser. Yes, I would like to thank the coordinator of this spectacular charity event Stephen Mc Nally and his family, Dad Louis, mother Margaret, brothers Martin and Noel, sister Theresa, Philip Mackin, and a most willing, helpful and friendly back up team and helpers for another top charity show and race day. A light went out in the Mc Nally household, when Stephen and his family lost a son and a beloved brother to cancer. This is total heart break for any family, but Stephens reason and inspiration behind the Burren Charity Working Dog Shows is to keep the memory of his brother alive through giving back to the charities, through his dog shows to the people who helped the family in their hour of need. This years chosen charity “Daisy Lodge Cancer Fund For Children “ is a charity that makes a real difference in the lives of families affected by cancer. Their mission is to empower and connect families, giving them the support they need to cope with the emotional and practical challenges of a cancer diagnosis. They also stand beside bereaved families, offering care and guidance to those grieving the loss of a child or parent. This is where your gate, racing, ring and raffle contribution to The Burren Charity Working Dog Show will go to, and what a very worthy cause. For that we truly thank you for your contribution. Thanks to Stephen and the Burren Team for a most enjoyable day, for the kindness you have shown to John and myself on the day.       Doagh Equestrian is situated on the beautiful Antrim coast in the village of Doagh, Co Antrim. This was a new venue for the “Keep er Lit” Dog show and Race day and the ideal spot for   last Sundays Show.  
      From early morning, cars and trailers arrived from North and South of the border. Some people came as far away as Limerick and Drogheda with families and dogs in tow. Our good canine folk love a good dog show in the summer and a chat with like minded people. They certainly were not disappointed at the Keep er Lit show.  
      As the show progressed, so did the banter and the craic. The rings were well spaced out with a good long race track. Paul Boyd was there with his country sports stand, with everything needed in the hunting fraternity. 
      Some very tasty burgers were available on site and an Equestrian shop with great discounts on offer on the day. I had to take control of my retail therapy when I got into that shop, as I was like a child in a toy shop with to much to choose from.
      The weather was glorious all day and at times to warm. As usual the raffle generated a great buzz around the field with some great prizes on offer.

      The racing was carried out as usual to perfection by The Mc Grath Racing Club Carlow. These people have many years experience in the Canine world both in showing and racing and their input helps to alleviate the pressure on the show organizer on the day. A job well done Biddy and team. 
      Some lovely photographs were taken on the day by various people, and no doubt these will be up on the site shortly.
      And Finally, Finally, they say behind every good man is a good woman and Leigh Thompson along with Paddy Gibson, you both definitely fitted into that category. Your show was run with impeccable organisation. It was evident on the day a lot of hard work and sleepless nights was put into  this now annual Show. Leigh and Paddy you pulled out all the stops on the day and produced a top class show in a top class venue. Well done and a credit to you both.

      Date : 27th July 2025 Location: Drom Aluinn Kennels BT 45 7LD Weigh in : 11am Open to all Breeds and sizes of dog All dogs competing must be 12mths or older in good health and free from injury Female dogs in heat will not be allowed All dogs are the responsibility of their owners and should be on leads unless instructed otherwise by someone running the events.
