A number of authors have retailed the legend of the Easington Hare. The version of it provided in "Folk Tales of the North Country" by F. Grice, published in 1944, places part of the story very firmly

But of a story from my local area found it on the bet so I thought I'd share as I enjoyed it

Good story cheers JCM I remember one day we were crossing back over some fields after a day out three of us with four lurchers and a terrier, when a hare come loping over the stubble about 100 and od

First time ive heard of this, Ive spent many a day when I was younger down Castle Eden Dene, bird nesting , conkering, making swings and just mooching about me and my mates used to know the dene like the back of our hands, we used to walk the mile pipe and we used to climb on to the top of the castle and catch the pigeons that were up there, weve even swam down Jaques Ladder, when I got my first ferret about 40 year ago I stareted to go ferretting down the dene, Ive been lamping around castle eden dene and for the size of the dene there was never many rabbits or hares in the fields around it, I can imagine before Peterlee was built it would of been crawling with game, as you would of only had the colliery villages, and the open fields would of stretched from Castle Eden to Easington Village apart from the farms, and the Big House at Peterlee, which was there before Peterlee was ever thought of.
