I've never had one spalted like this before. I found the fork a few days ago, perfect catty shape. I removed the bark, cut to size, sanded it and put on a coat of Tung oil. I was working in bad light and I've noticed a few blemishes since, so I will give it a good work over then a few more coats of Tung I think.


It's a shame, one side seems better looking to me. I'll be trying to find some more of this stuff though!

Got to be careful with spalting though, will continue to spread and weaken the forks unless stabilised, saw a post on the slingshot forum about it

Microwave nuking to remove the moisture is the best way of stabillising spalted wood mate.

Spalting is actually a collection of fungi attacking the wood at the same time the lines you see are where all the different fungi meet. They are called zone lines where that particular fungi is sort of setting out it territory so to speak. You can spalt your own wood quite easily and then you have more control over how far it goes.

 

Search youtube for spalting wood and there are a few videos.
