Goats Are Still About,

Recommended Posts

Through sheer boredom and lack of work I decided to take a trip out to the sticks and have a walk, burn off some cobwebs,so I arrive at the yard at 8.30 to mell William the land owner allrealdy busy at his work, after the initial chat he tells me the goats have been around but theres only a small few in the gang.

So unleash the 2 dogs, the kelpie x and my saluki 1st x.They are good company out along and can deal with any unexpected surprises we might meet,if you get my drift.William told me only the day before the goats were high on the ridges to my right hand side and had early kids in tow with them, so as I had no intent on slaying any for the foreseeable future I headed to my left. We walked through new growths of heather and brambles, and the walk was as usual treacherous at times, you need to keep yer eyes on the ground and to where you put your feet. After about and hour of scrambling and swearing/sweating and panting we came to a small piece of woodland. This area can be good to hold a deer or two and is also a favourite spot for the smellies at times, out of the rain and serves as a wind breaker too for the mob.As we walked I saw the Kelpie bitch throw her head up in the air and sonic too was getting a bit geed up in his manner so I knew instinctively something was about, and as I did not want any goats bothered I took a hold of sonics collar and continued to walk quietly and silently as I could.I gave Taz the order to heel and she stayed by my side with no fear of her breaking ranks. Then between the trees I saw a flash of white, and then another and then one of the goats stopped to check exactly what it was that spoilt their little siesta. In between the trees was a head stareing at me intently.Sonic at this point was slightly excited to say the least but not today I reassured him.Got the camera up and took a fast photo just before they dissapeard into the mist.

I continued on my journey through the small wood and then hit the path that takes you around the forestry and back in the directionof the farm yard from whence I came.So the dogs were after relaxing again and sonic was released to enjoy his ramble. Now almost to the end of the walk there are 3 very small fields, possibly 1/2 an acre in size and a bit smaller too.As we walked along Sonic was in front of me and I saw that his ears had pricked up,a sign something had caught his attention so again I grabbed hold of his collar, put Taz in the sit position and scanned the horizion and there for sure was a nanny and a pair of twin kids, grey in colour and scuttering away as fast as their legs could take them,so I again was happy to see them and even more happy to stop the dog wreaking carnage amongst this little family.I reached the yard again and no one about I decided to stick the dogs in the van and go back to see just how many goats and kids were about.

I travelled into the large decidious woods and tell tale signs were every where of goats,It seemed there was a few more than 6 due to the vast area broken up by hoof prints and droppings everywhere you looked.I then reached the top pf the wood that leads on to the ridges, and happily I could smell the goats so I knew I was very close to them,as I crept slowly along the edge I heard a rustling and slowly tried to get as near to the sound as possible, and then what did I do........I STEPPED ON A BRANCH AND IT LET OUT A LOUD CRACK :censored: .then you could heart rustling, lots of it.the few goats that were about took off and went straight across the rocky outcrops out of sight, and I didnt see one of them.I was rightly pissed off,After siting and listening to them travelling through the cover, they then reappeared way over on the next ridge so I did my best to get a few photos,I counted 20 adults and 12 kids travel along their path and there were more to the right of them as I could hear the other kids bleating,so all in all there are not as few goats as I forst thought. This summer I think the only shooting or capturing of goats will be with the camera.I probably will take a kid in a few months for the table but only 1 or 2 I reckon
