Skull Hooker 185
I have bought a .223 which was screw cut. It is a brand new rifle and I presume the stamp underneath the screw cutting is the proof mark. I have now attended my local gunsmith to buy a moderator, who tells me that it has to go off for proofing with the rifle, but isn't it already proofed. What are they proofing, the mod or the rifle/ mod combo? If the latter is the case, if you changed the mod, would it need proofing again? Is it all a bit of a con to screw money out of shooters? You'd think that the mods, which are general calibre specific, would be sold ready proofed. The last question. Is it illegal to buy a moderator and not have it proofed on your rifle? Any info or clarification around proofing would be appreciated. Skully Quote Link to post

Skully ,ihad a few inches lopped off my .cz 527, and had a rethread also,no mention of having it re proofed? ,i also purchased a sonic 45 mod ,which can be purchased proofed or not ,which cost a tenner more,so ide assume un proofed mods are not illegal for sale ,hope this helps ☺ Quote Link to post
walshie 2,804
Sounds like your gunsmith is talking out of his arse. Go and buy a moderator somewhere else. Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
+1 Walshie. You only need to proof any firearm if you sell it. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Sounds like he's trying to make a quick buck, Get the mod somewhere else and I'm sure you'll have no problem. You do not need to have a detachable moderator proofed whilst attached to the rifle. Quote Link to post
Tremo 138
+1. The rifle and moddy are separate entries on your ticket, not a combo. They should be treated individually for proofing and such like. I just had a new moderator proofed and there was no mention of sending the rifle as well. Utter nonsense. Tell your RFD to do one. Yokel Matt 918
I agree. As long as the moderator is suitable for the caliber (.25 for a .223 i think) then that's all you need. If they don't have the optimum diameter mod for the calibre don't get fobbed off with the next best thing purely cos that's what he's go on the shelf... I check that as well if I were you judging by what this rfd has already tried to pull. Quote Link to post
Skull Hooker 185
I got the mod from him yesterday. He asked me did I want to send everything off for proofing and I said no. We tried the mod on the rifle to make sure the milled bushing was clear of the barrel, then he insisted I take it off as he couldn't let it leave on the rifle. Dramatic eh? Quote Link to post
jollyscotsman 11
Indeed??,strange behaviour bud. Quote Link to post

Yokel Matt 918
To be fair it's probably best to remove the mod before you put it back in the cabinet, clean the crown and fit a thread protector... But if I said I did that regularly I'd be lying. Edit to say what calibre is the mod? Is it .25 or .30 Edited February 6, 2015 by Yokel Matt Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Not sure I'd be visiting this particular RFD again. Quote Link to post
Skull Hooker 185
Yokel Matt The mod carries no markings. A Wildcat predator 8 When you say is it a 25 or a 30, what do you mean? Are they the two ranges of mods sold? Ive got another Predator for my 204 Ruger which is marked 204 Ruger and .223 Rem. Its stamped into the mod. All a bit confusing this, Quote Link to post
Tremo 138
My CQB came in a box marked ".223", yet the mod is correctly stamped with my required calibre ".22-250". Don't know if this is the norm from Ase Utra, or it was just put in the wrong box by them (or at the proofing house). I've also read that a number of manufacturers just stamp the maximum recommended calibre on the mod. I've no experience with the Wildcats though, so I can't comment. Quote Link to post
Yokel Matt 918
Most mods come in certain caliber ranges where the baffles are an optimal diameter for a range of similar width bullets. The only reason I mention it is that this rfd sounds the kind of bloke who'll sell you a mod designed for a .308 / 30-06 for your .223 if that's all he's got on the shelf. Same thing happened to me a while ago. Quote Link to post
