Saudi King Dead.....

Recommended Posts

The death of King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia has been announced.

David CamMoron has praised the late king form"strengthening understanding between faiths" and for "his commitment to peace", while President Obama has praised him as a leader who "had the courage of his convictions".

Only recently were Saudi women granted the right to drive alone (!), but still require a male relative's permission to travel or even to leave the house alone. Religions other than Islam are absolutely forbidden - the building of churches , synagogues etc is not allowed and foreign priests are not allowed to visit for the purpose of preaching. Public beheadings are common and the 'crime' of apostasy (denouncing Islam) is punishable by death. Rape victims can be stoned for adultery.

The parliament is largely appointed by the monarch, while political opponents and dissidents are routinely imprisoned without trial and tortured.

Saudi Arabia is regularly accused of being the number one state sponsor of global terrorism.

King Abdullah will be succeeded by his half-brother, who is being encouraged to continue recent 'modernizations'.

(Tonight's news reported that he was given a traditional Muslim funeral. I had visions of them putting 20lb of Semtex in the coffin and leaving him outside the American embassy !)
