On my walk with dogs today about 3 30pm , was a quite few people with young children and there dogs prob pets. My dogs are good temps, my older dog Bryn likes people and ok with dogs if they ok with him, my young dog Buck loves people and likes dogs, so there not dogs that going to hurt or upset anybody or dogs . Don't know if it was because bit warmer and just nice day , but as above seem to be lot of family's out there pets. normally if meet other dog walkers I leave my dogs off , because I know they nice natured animals , most times the other dog owners are wary at 1st of my dogs, or should say Buck just of his size well that's ok, with in few secs they can see he just big soft thing . Well when I see people more so kids , I hold Buck back not because he hurt them , but he may knock them down accidently that why. So see the 1st lot , they see me and stand still , ive got Buck holding his collar I call them on down the track . the bloke picks his lad up put him on his back, the wife hold the girl dead tight , then walk to wards me staring at Buck, they went dead quick to get past me. I though fckin hell its only bloody daft dog. the 2nd lot about 1/4 mile further on chap+ woman 3 kids and little fluffy white dog , same again I stand still Bryn stands by me don't need lead he very biddable , hold Buck on collar he quite biddable , but as said above with people (kids) hold him. I call them down track , they stood still talking to each other then turn around and started to turn back. I shouted to them come down, the bloke said the daughter petrified of the dog. So said stay there , I turned back walked about 100 yds got to a gate got over and stayed there and shouted them on. I told me wife when I got back home about it, I said if I had just walked with both dogs loose, don't think this would have happened its me standing holding Buck gives the wrong impression to other people that he's dangerous animal. Wife said no you done the right thing, it would be worse if he was loose and he went up to people , even though he big soft thing ,he to big!. So it looks like this summer going to be a bloody pain the arse, will have to go to different place or go later when most have been+gone

I always hold my male back ... he is soft as a brush but big.. and has a tendency to run up to other folks & other dogs .. so he stays on the lead .. I rather him be kept to one side while folks walk past than have some copper at the door & get my self in bother because of this dog control act thing .. sod what other folks think

Whenever I meet people when I'm walking the dogs I usually put my male lurcher on the lead, the 2 bitches (1 terrier, 1 lurcher) I don't usually bother, although they sometimes bark a bit if there's other dogs, they won't have a row at all.

The old terrier is always on the lead as he's a grumpy half blind old c**t :D

My male lucher is sound with other dogs as long as they are not aggresive towards him but I usually put him on the lead - just in case  He's great with people but has a tendency to piss on prams, bikes, picknickers rucksacks etc  so it's a no brainer for me

Cheers, D.

Buck just trotted up to the old fella and jumped in his boot, the old lad shit him self , called him out when there little jacks ran at him lol nobody said nout think they all were in shock  , the fella was ok he did laugh after, he said bloody good job he soft big bugger , wouldn't like to upset him, I said them little jacks will sort him out no prob :D

I always walk mine late at night or early in the morning to avoid all the dickheads. Has the advantage that not many wrong uns follow you home to find where you live so they can come back later and nick your dogs.

Bird dont take offence you've reacted sensibly but people with not knowing you're dogs and having kids I don't think are wrong in being protective it's other numbskulls that cause issues ! Part and parcel of being a large breed owner ! At least you walk them pal

There's an awful German Shepherd which frequents my local wood: or to be more precise an awful owner.

The first couple of times we met was in the dark as I was walking my kelpies before work. I could hear a woman shouting frantically for me to put my dogs on leads. I politely refused and asked why to which she replied that hers hadn't been socialised...I said, "That's ok; mine have been!"

I didn't see her again for a while but when I did, several months later, I pointed out that maybe she should have socialised him during the intervening months.

I saw her last week and she took him off down a side path and beat the poor thing with one of those plastic tennis ball launchers every time he barked...no wonder it hates everybody!

that's it Neal , you get people with dogs like Alsatians and they don't know how to deal with them , there frightened of there power+ temp , so they either let them run riot , because they haven't let the dog know who boss . or they do as you say keep it on a lead not socialised , because if the dog kicked off they wouldn't be able to control + stop it. now not so long back a bloke got a pure gsd where I go, and this dog is ok but , you can it wouldn't take it long to kick off with another dog, same with people its ok but you can sense it about the dog its stiff got that look in its eye if know what I mean, where as Buck the opposite waging his tail just like soft pup. But one day this gsd run at my mates little terrier and stood over him, fook me Buck flew at the gsd and hit it in shoulder knocking back about 6 ft , then he went up to the gsd and put his head over its neck barking , I got him off and walked away , the gsd owner was in shock lol don't forget Buck a working dog and know how to use his size+ jaw, plus he proper bit bigger+stronger than few gsds with the greyhound in him.
