Good post this and going with the different opinions,everybody has their different methods of getting their dogs fit and keeping them fit,which i had a hunch this would be the case when this thread first appeared but what no-one has yet to mention yet is decent rest between running them hard or even when your putting them through their paces when getting them fit for the start of the season,i think watching them for signs of fatigue and stiffness ect and not pushing them too hard especially too soon as every dog has their breaking point no matter how fit they are, can be just as beneficial to keeping yer dogs fit and getting the best from them

 

I myself give mine road work through aug and sept gradually putting more miles in as the weeks pass with gradually more work and runs towards oct,but from oct onwards its just the work they get that keeps them fit enough for me but this said i may walk a few miles on roads to get where im going sometimes when i dont take the car

 

FEED THEM WELL,RUN THEM WELL AND REST THEM WELL AND THEY SHOULDN'T BE TOO FAR AWAY FROM BEING AT THEIR BEST

i mix road work an running off the lead actually working which seems to keep her fit enough without the need for an actual fitness regime...an she also excercises off the lead with my mates dog as well on a golf course(fast running ground )

before i start iam no expert but i feel road work is must for feet and nails shorter nails i find less injuries to the feet ihad friends from the south ie fen area

mainly because of rock that lies in rushes branches they did not want to run there dogs but was it coincidens foot injuries on both dogs. also throwing a ball was mentioned i have found a small rubber rugby shape ball with plenty bounce so when it lands the dog does not no which way it is going to bounce it helps k

eep them sharp in the mouth the dogs seem to realy enjoy it the fact they have to jink and dive gets them ready for the real thing on the other hand if the other dogs had been given the same start there outcome may have been better must add i took my best dog down to the fenns boy did that fancy rabbits showed my wee 21#bitch areal hard time

with my old lurchers i would take them to my local greyhound trainers and use the treadmill,also the swimming pool,also run them with the greyhounds on the track,plus running next to the pushbike.

Has nobody let their dogs swim over the summer months....?....Hydrotherapy is a good alternative and they dont get knocked up toes or over heat...

I haven't road walked purposefully for nearly a decade now and i like to think of my dog as being fit.being out every day does helpIMHO....

Just another thought after what Snoop said about some dogs needing to be run lighter/heavier than others: I always find that I need a full season with a dog before I can categorically say at what type of weight and muscle it runs at its very best: that first season is a learning time. I generally find that the Saluki types run better lighter rather than heavier, but of course it depends on how fast they are too: the faster dogs always need a bit more muscle and weight on them at the beginning of a really hard day's or night's work as they'll fade fast if they're too light.

Running dogs are sprinters,so ideally they need to be able to get up to speed quick and maintain it for a resonably short period of time.Trotting behind a pushbike isn't doing anything for the dog As Wilf said the best form of exercise for a running dog is WORK i.e. running after its quarry.Sprinters train by doing lots of short fast runs,they don't go out pottering along for 4 or 5 miles.All roadwork would do for a dog is,knock a bit of weight off and tone the muscle,it won't improve cardio vascular,or muscle mass unless it was very intense (short and fast).

A guy near me keeps and race's greys,they never run,he just walks them 3 times a day.

 

never runs them. BEHAVE YA SELF. must greyhound men will put there diogs on a gallop at least a couple times a week, the one near me has one on his own property 350 yrd long rising up hill at the end.

 

trotting behind the bike or car impoves its stamminar , also behind the car you can speed up or take it slow, i will very often cover 2 miles in about 8 mins.

 

i do agree though , that at the end of it all , actual working is the best thing for fittnes

 

F**k me i'd forgotten all about this argument.Tomo your spot on mate,but i didn't mean that the greys are never run,i meant that they aren't doing it everyday.They spend two days a week doing track work,but there is no time spent trotting the dogs for miles (it would do f***all for the them) unless the dog is breathing hard and teating muscle,its doin nothing but hardening the feet and toning muscle.IMO Bill
