Barrel Chopping

Recommended Posts

I know a match crown is called a match crown deker, I was just asking what difference there is, and whats the difference in accuracy? And how much more work is involved to do it and why don't rifles come with a match crown if it makes them more accurate?

Probably costs the manufacturers another 10p to do it for each rifle so they save the money!

Could someone please explain the difference between the normal crown and a match crown?

Usually called a Match or Target crown!

Closest I would trust is Neil Mckillop in Mortimer, he does all my work these days.   01189333100 mckillopeng@Hotmail.com

Nasher - richard reeve at New Avon Arms of Pill on the outskirts of bristol has a lathe and does a very good job. Had my fluted .223 cut, re-crowned and threaded for £80 I think. All I would say is make sure you press and hold him to firm collection date, I was too relaxed and waited a very long time.

Incidentally my barrel length went from 25" to 18" and it's made a world of difference handling wise with no loss of accuracy.

I spoke to Richard and he advised me not to have it done he already has one of my air rifles in for repair and that's not going to get done till after Christmas

Cheers deker when I have mine cut down do I just ask for a match crown then

Whilst he works on, and shoots all manor of rifles, and does a lot of target and field work himself, he will tend to put match crowns on unless someone specifically wants something else.

They take a little longer, and arguably are a more skilful job, and for what it's worth, I think they also look good.

If you want a match crown then I would always suggest you ask for it specifically, many, (probably most) RFD will not tend to cut these as standard, and to help, perhaps worth printing off the picture (poor quality though it is)!
