tomshep 41
I ferret on my own a fair bit with just my whippet to help he marks holes ok and helps pick up any that miss a net but the best thing he does and bugger knows how because I never trained him to do it is when I,m working a big warren he will sit above the ferret even when no rabbits are bumping. I have been watching him do this and every time I start thinking where's that bloody ferret gone I get the locater and go to where the dog is and shore enough there is the ferret below him. Do other people's dogs do this and what other handy traits have they picked up. 1 Quote Link to post
morton 5,369
The sign of a usefull ferreting mutt, many of them have the knack,my old Deerhoundy/Cur had an habit of following the action below, above, then striking at the requisite moment, uncanny at times. Quote Link to post
pengelli 375
when i used to go ferreting there used to be an old border collie bitch on the farm who used to tag along with me she never got in the way so i let her hang around then i noticed when the ferret lay up below she would be standing above it pawing the ground used to check with the bleeper and she would be on the money all the time used to mark holes too by just staring at them and then at me 1 Quote Link to post
blackmaggie 3,377
watch ian clayton on youtube ferreting on the dales sounds very much like yours its uncanny how some mutts just seem to know were to be at the right time and its good to watch a educated dog like that Quote Link to post
shaaark 11,554
As morton said, plenty of curs watch /wait/follow what's happening Quote Link to post
neil cooney 10,416
Funny a collie should be mentioned as I've seen a collie do it too. The same collie when a terrier was to ground would often run at the entrance a fox was about to bolt from and turned many's a fox back to ground. I've seen lurchers do it too and it's because they've learned that the nearer they are to the ferret the nearer they are to the bolted rabbit. Quote Link to post
