dont know first stick but bark off then has been seasond for a year just trying to see how i go on before i get nice wood

Have done both, but prefer the bark on. Looks a bit more " rustic " to the eye aka a proper countryman's stick

Some woods are better with bark off as the bark splits and peels when dry. Holly and Rowan are two that do, with some like Ash taking the bark off is optional and it has merit both ways.

E done abit of both some all bark some no bark and some with abit of bark left on. It aldepends on what you like or who ever your making it for likes .

leave the bark on ,I think it spoils it with the bark off

I usually cut a few in winter,so i have a few to go at in a year or so..

My parents and I do handmade walking sticks and canes (see "Dutch Flat Walking Sticks" on facebook for some examples). With sassafras, we tend to keep the bark on and hand finish it down very smooth. Adding some varnish produces a very rich dark red color. With hickory, we peel the bark off and after the wood dries we do a series of coarse to fine sandpaper finishing of the wood. The end result is often a bright white with the surface as smooth as glass. Willow works quite well with the bark off as well.
