gnasher16 31,602
Part of NASA research is investigating the potential for alien life, PART OF IT. The Voyager missions are not a part of that, certainly not a significant financial part anyway. There mission is to study the solar system and now beyond it. They're not looking for life. The research is as beneficial to us as any purist research. Which in turn is necessary for applied research. Excuse my 9 year old childlike immagination......but do you not think there should come a time when human beings need to just sit happy with our lot and stop looking for trouble.......what IF we woke up some mad deranged sharp headed evil little creatures who then decided to wipe us out or brought back some killer virus we never knew existed...... its ok saying discovering new things is good for the human race....but what if something was discovered that was not good for the human race.....just shrug our shoulders and say oh well we bit off more than we could chew that time.....i mean the unknown is the unknown right ? frazdog 252
Just read that info good info aswell but i think that most of that stuff would have been invented anyway, but still dont think none of it is worth doing when human lives could be saved jmo
frazdog 252
Dont worry gnash i think your safe from the little creatures lol i agree with you tho the answer is not out there haha
Born Hunter 17,965
Gnash, what do you mean by 'be happy with our lot and stop looking for trouble'? If you mean discovering what's out there and understanding it, then no I don't agree. Ignorance is dangerous imo. If you mean actively trying to make contact with intelligent life, then yeah I kinda agree. IMO an advanced race of aliens would be bad news for Humans.

But I think I was wrong to do so. Necessity is the mother of invention is an old adage, but none the less true. There was a need for those inventions so they set about trying to reinvent some and invent others. Without the need for those applications it is questionable if anyone would have had the foresight or the money to develop them. TC
frazdog 252
I agree bh but i tgink theres nothing to worry about on the alien front,
Born Hunter 17,965
If we are going to talk about aliens, a topic that has nothing to do with Voyager, surely it is better that we are as technologically advanced and capable in all environments to ensure if such a meeting ever occurs we are as prepared as possible? If you don't believe aliens are a possibility then you have nothing to fear on that front. Edited October 17, 2014 by Born Hunter
Born Hunter 17,965
Other intelligent organisms are not the only potential threat out there. There is a entire universe of shit that could wipe us from existence. Understanding it and being comfortable in the environments beyond our Earth will be key to our long term survival. Not to mention beneficial to our short term survival.

Born Hunter 17,965
For something that's impossible, there is an awful lot of intelligent people that disagree.

If you don't believe aliens are a possibility then you have nothing to fear on that front. not entirely true there Bh the voyager have gold disks onboard with allsorts of info on them such as sounds, pictures of our physiology and our feckin address just incase they bump onto some nice aliens As for Frazzled, mate the basic mathmatical probabitlity is that there is life out there just on sheer number of stars in our galaxy alone! You extrapolate this to include all the KNOWN galaxies and the likelihood of there being life is far greater than not, so much so that it is a certainty Edited October 17, 2014 by mushroom
Born Hunter 17,965
Mushroom, you c**t, lol. I was waiting for someone to mention those disks. The purpose of neither Voyagers was to look for alien life, but being the most distant man made objects some folks thought it fit to put them on 'just in case'. Perhaps I should have said, "nothing to do with the mission of Voyagers". LOL. I did also hint towards it in an earlier post when I said "certainly not a significant financial part anyway" in the context of NASAs search for ET and Voyager. Simply, the Voyager project was not funded to search for aliens, but as they were going to travel deep space some optimistic physicists thought they'd bolt on a couple of welcome cards.
