Chris Harrison 21
Okay so I followed the advice given. Went over without a gun and just looked, listened and sat waiting. Yesterday I put some bread down for the pigeons and some veg for the rabbits as there is an allotment further down the road so I thought they may eat their stuff. Come to look this morning and nothing has been touched at all. I took some pics of the land but can't put them up here. It won't let me do it via photo bucket and they are to big to upload straight to the forum. I walked the entire perimeter and didnt see a thing. Except birds I'm not allowed to shoot. RemyBolt 420
If you're luring birds there with bread, you're not allowed to shoot them either. Use tinypic to upload the pictures. 1 Quote Link to post

RemyBolt 420
How much land do you have to shoot on? Around the edges of the fence (I'm assuming there are fences) do you see any rabbit lines? Grass Tunnels? You can see here the spots the rabbits land on...great for snaring (so I've recently learned) http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_auraBKYm3dU/SiwjwFf-WsI/AAAAAAAAAuQ/d84RQfFjb0g/s400/Richpic0854.jpg You can see a grass parting here where animals have squashed down a path. http://prescotonline.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/animal_path.jpg Here's another path and you can see the plants parting when they reach the hedge. Follow the path high in the picture. Top of the picture just off to the right you can see a small dark parting with a slight horizontal piece of grass across it. This is the kind of thing you're looking for. https://c2.staticflickr.com/8/7107/7461535556_ed17a773fb_z.jpg Here, obviously there's a rabbit, but you can also see the black 'grass tunnels' but you can also see the rabbit paths/routes/highway's into the grass-tunnels. https://rideblog.files.wordpress.com/2011/05/05302011ride1.jpg 1 Quote Link to post
Chris Harrison 21
there are grass tunnels like in those pics and they go from out the woods where the barbed wire fence and trees make the perimeter to patches of short, squashed down grass. the rest of the field is knee high except these patches and all round the perimeter of the 3 fields its short, stamped down grass. no other signs of life though. no eaten plants etc. im also assuming this is wrong time of year? spring would be best maybe? the farmer will put his cows on soon and they will cut the grass over the winter. i might be wrong but where the grass is bent over it looks like theres enough room underneath for a rabbit to use it as a tunnel. When you get into the field, if you get into the field at point A, assuming point B is where the grass run lines and grass tunnels are, how far is it from entering the field (point A) to get to the tunnels (point B )? Chris Harrison 21
almost as soon as you climb over the gate and hit the tall grass mate. then comes the ditch that separates the first field from second, thats dotted with small trees. the grass in the ditch is squashed down all the way down the ditch. the run lines are then scattered about and if followed lead to the patches. the woods are right at the back of the field. not sure how far in distance but takes me 20mins to half hour to from one end to another. runs are dotted all over the field. all lead to open patches of squashed down grass. no signs of anything been eaten and i cant find droppings either. I think I'm just rubbish at visualising. A couple of pics would be really helpful. The questions that'll be answered will be whether the runs are still in use, what's going on with the flattened grass, what could be going wrong and how you can work around that. Get some pics onto tinypic and then use the "Forum" link to post them on here. What I'm starting to think...are you driving to the permission and is the sound of the car scaring any rabbits off? The less you move, the better your odds of seeing something. But high grass is not going to help. Quote Link to post
Chris Harrison 21
I'll have another go on tiny pic when I'm back home later mate. I uploaded a pic on there and shrunk it to the message board option and then a window came up with the url links on. Pressed image on the reply screen here but it kept saying this forum can't use the extension or something like that. Anyway. The fields are by a main road and have been for decades mate. It's not a really busy road but you get cars passing. Right at the back though you can hardly hear it. We park at the gate and climb into the field and walk to the back. Only problem is the grass is that long it's impossible to walk quietly. Quote Link to post
treecreeper 1,136
I'm no expert but runs out of woods leading to big flat patches sounds like deer to me. If there's a road along side it have a nosey for roadkill. Quote Link to post
Chris Harrison 21
There are deer about mate but very rarely on that land. There's animals on every field but the 3 I'm allowed on Quote Link to post
RemyBolt 420
When you're on Tinypic, after you've uploaded the image, you'll have a load of options. Just click the link with the bits on it that says "For forums" Just copy and paste the link directly into where you write messages. Don't click anything on here except the "Post" button. No "My media" or "Insert picture" or anything like that. Ignore all of that. The code from tinypic is all you need to post. So the part where you write your message will look like..... Alright lads, here are the pics: https.www. tinypic .com. blar blar blar blar.............more blar blar here....[ /IMG] What's going on with that pic? And that'll be all you'll need to put. I doubted it to start with, but now I love Tinypic.com Really useful site. Quote Link to post
Chris Harrison 21
Okay mate I'll do that. I wasn't posting straight into the text box. Quote Link to post
kanny 21,145
Its catch 22 you need to learn your land but at the same time not spend to much time there.... things should become more obvious once the cover and leafs have died back .if it hasn't been said already wind is your enemy and your freind as wind carrys smell and noise so use it to your advantage taking your smell and noise away from your quarry not to your quarry....pigeon are fickle some days they will be a plenty some days nothing but all need to roost so look for those tree's they like....look for there droppings on and around the trees you will need to be in a good hiding place at least a hour or so before dusk and dont give up until you can no longer see through your scope....keep at it bud it will come.
