Matthew Phillips 36
Hi guys, Just a quick one. On a moderated 22wmr how far would sound from the crack of the bullet travel? Will someone be able to hear the crack from 300yards away? 500 yards? ect? Just trying to decide if 22lr sub or 22wmr would be more suitable for some rabbits in a field about 1000 yards from residential. Thanks Quote Link to post

shropshire dan 467
Thats the funny thing mate im not at all new to shooting lol. Ive had air rifles since I was 5 years old and then got into shotguns about 4 years ago. Im new to CF rifles and have had rimfires for about 10 months now only got rid of my hmr about a month ago and got the .22-250 to replace it. Would never get rid of my 1976 brno mod2 .22lr love that to bits. Shot a fair few charlie's with the 12g and hmr just none with the .22-250 the shots have been provided just that particular situation I didn't feel confident in the shot Edited September 8, 2014 by shropshire dan Quote Link to post

Thanks Once you go supersonic, all you can do is moderate the muzzle blast. Unfortuntely the crack comes from the speed of the bullet and the sound travels a long way. Even a HV from a .22 LR will echo off the houses. I've echoed it off hills several miles away across a valley at night! I've never shot a WMR so can't be specific on that one, but it carries a lot more powder than a .22 LR. If you want to be stealthy then .22 sub is the only way to go. Quote Link to post
shropshire dan 467
+1 the .22 sub is unbelievably quiet. As quiet if not quiter than most spring air rifles imo. More noise when the bullet hits the rabbits skull than the actual muzzle blast. Quote Link to post
Elliott 436
I went out with my pal on Sun night and shot two rabbits on the golf course. First was at 95 yards and the second at 110. He was stood about 20 yards behind me and didn't even hear the rifle fire, just the sound of the bullet impact Subsonic all the way for stealth Quote Link to post
charlie caller 3,654
If the houses` are a thousand yards away, I would not worry about it, get a decent moderator on it and crack on, I am happy to use the .243 300 yards from buildings at night, never had a problem, chances are the people in the houses wont hear a thing. J_Edwards 70
The sonic boom goes a long way, and it's impossible to stop, even with a good moderator. In the dead of night, I find that tractors, combines, lorrys, car doors slamming, etc, make just as much noise, so don't worry about anyone complaining. A neighbour near me made a comment about my .17HMR and .223 crack, but thinks nothing of firing up his Harley Davidson whenever he wants, for all the world to hear, so it's swings and roundabouts really.
