mhopton 807
Myxi we all know that it was man made for the Aussies a long time. As it's our (hunters) Maine threat on our rabbiting permissions where we've seen it wipe out 100s in a short time. Cut a long story short, over the latter stages of last seson and over the summer months up until now I've seen rabbits running about with myxi on my permission then the weekend later when I'm back on it I was expecting to find loads dead or just sitting around waiting to be cought or shot , but fare from it they are all running around happy as larry to my relief, but no signs of myxi . I was out with the lamp the other night with my dog blade out of the five he got 3 were scared around the eyes!! I've seen this on the rabbits time and time again not just on my land but other land aswel , my best mate and hunting partner Adam (rabbitcatcher1) have seen it on his too. So my question to you all is ,1, have you seen this on your land 2 how long on average is myxi around for before it go's 3 do you think it's looking promising that it's no longer got a hold as it once did 4 what do you think of my theory on this matter .and finally number 5 do you think I'm way off the mark with this and need to stop wrighting shite about things I know fxxx all about ATB mark Quote Link to post
richie1984 191
I was looking this up the other week pal apparently more rabbits are surviving it every year,as they are becoming amune to it.mixy thrives when it's warm and damp apparently.I have noticed tho that it's never round where I go in the winter. tsteve9999 456
I agree mate, it never wipes a population out just thins it down some. It only seems to strike round here when there's a good number in an area, maybe every 2 or 3 years, With the bad winters we've had lately I haven't seen many at all for the last couple of years but they are recovering well this year so I expect to begin seeing them more often soon. bobh 27
This makes perfect t sense to me. If myxi comes through a population of rabbits and kills off all the animals except those that are immune then there will only be immune animals left to rebuild the next population and therefore the offspring are more likely to be immune. I know this is a very simplistic overview but over several years with several bouts of myxi this must be happening. Quote Link to post
paulus 26
immunity is not transferable to offspring sadly, the only immunity is if they survive it as youngsters Quote Link to post

The one 8,600
When i used to be bothered to read stuff like this , im sure i read there where ten strains of myxi and they where using strain ten thats why R.H.D. came along ?. As said myxi doesnt cull them all just like human diseases the old and the sick thats why you can cull a big rabbit with scaring round its eyes . I always thought that immunity could be pasted to kits in the nest threw the does milk as you never seem to find a young rabbit with myxi , up here there more likely to fall to (cociddious) spelling as if you open them up there livers huge and covered in spots . But at the first sign we hit them hard cull all the myxi rabbits while they still have some feed value to the ferrets and hope the healthy one get a chance to breed again 1 Quote Link to post
bhawk 64
Ive always thought of myxi as somewhat like a flu, it comes in waves, wipes a lot out, those who survive go on to breed and everythings ok for a while, til another wave comes along and repeats the process.I do think its getting less overall compared to 10-20 years ago, back then it seemed to completely obliterate the furries for a good long while, this might just be my faltering memory though. Had a small amount of myxi locally this year, very very localised though Quote Link to post
