1966 Coursing

The thing is, we should never, ever, compare this to true coursing. They are running captive-held hares. This is not, IMO, hunting. True coursing men only run wild hares on their own ground. That's my take on things.....but it's nice historical footage, so thanks for sharing it...... :victory:

The organised coursing which also went hand in hand with licensed betting gave the foothold to the anti hunting brigade to start their mass campaign and propoganda that led to the hunting ban. As shown on the clip only two hares were killed and the rest escaped, the negative publicity given shows the hares being released in front of two hounds which in itself shows coursing in a negative light..So the organised coursing does more harm to the country persuit. In N Ireland the organised coursing is not permitted but a lad out for a run is allowed. The antis always cling to the negative aspects like any footage of hounds tearing something to pieces never the quarry escaping and the miles and miles walking in the wind and rain enjoying a activity that has been enjoyed by thousands for centuries

That type of coursing is called "Park" coursing and seems to be the most popular here in Ireland. I have no problem with organised "open" coursing, as it was done in the UK but I've no taste for the running of any captive or enclosed animals.

It's all done in muzzles these days which is a farce in my opinion. Surely that just prolongs any suffering. The antis have loads of film of muzzled hounds catching hares.
