Blackdog92 2,047
How do lads I'm having a bit of trouble with my lurcher retrieving he's comeing up for 18 months and I still carnt get him to retrieve I've tried everything and he just doesn't seem interested. I started him like I have with all my others as a pup rolling a ball about for him to chase about and try to get him excited but to no avail he'll chase and pick up a dead rabbit thrown for him but them he just buggers off with it. He can catch rabbits so I know he can do half the job but what good is it if he won't fetch it back I'm almost at my wits end and it's getting to that point were I'm almost pulling my hair out. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated. Please help. Quote Link to post
bird 10,014
well at 18 months old, you should have it done+ dusted . not al lurchers will retrieve though some just wont do it once they caught or killed the rabbit the fun gone out of it for them . just chill with it when it gets a rabbit , walk away from it its only a poxy rabbit lol, it might even bring it with it to get back to if it sees it as no big deal . if it don't bring back it still catching so you not blanked . morton 5,369
Some dogs retrieve without training, some you can train and train to no avail, others see the art of retrieving as only for the field and their catches, get it out in the field,in a couple of months, let it thrash a few bunnys about and see how it gets on then, then get used to the yards yomping with a non retriever,if need be.Ive owned a couple of non retrievers,id own them again, mind you I was a tad lighter built and fitter, ive looked in the mirror, sell me your non retriever mucker. 1 Quote Link to post
dogmad riley 1,351
Mine was a nightmare to learn and still not were I want him to be, I couldn't learn him to retrieve due to the fact he wouldnt and still won't chase a ball, rabbit skin, stick, dummy etc just doesn't excite him. For some reason will only chase live game. Once he has caught he comes to about 10 yards and waits for me which is very annoying. He is a saluki whippet bull greyhound x s/w/g so very sighthoundy a splash of collie would go along way Maybe I have failed with his retrieving. Quote Link to post
