Hft With A Springer..

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to get into HFT & want to start off with a spring rifle..

I know it's gonna be a matter of opinion, but I'd like to know what spring set up's people are already using or would suggest/recommend?

Thanks

Im currently using a hw97 .177 tuned by Sandwell field sports topped with a mtc viper 10 x44 its running at 10.8 using jsb exacts 4.52 have not entered any comps as such but have shot a course or two using it it was the reason for the tune ;)currently compete using my pcp in club shoots, there a several lads who use various weirauchs hw98 97 95 77s also tx200 and prosports etc to good effect ;) i had a 98 also spot on accurate just did not fit me even with the adjustable stock as standard . i opted for the 97 as it what i foun most comfortable for me having said that i brought a custom stock for it as like to shoot thumb up just personal preference. The thing with hft is any hunting setup can be used the hardest part is range finding once you are comfortable with your setup and can group well then you can tweakthings here an there best thing to do is justshoot a few friendly comps or join a club etc. If you choose to opt for shooting a .22 then it becomes even more crucial to range well as some kills are 15mm etc.

Thanks for your reply mate, it's much appreciated!

That's a lovely looking rifle, I'm very envious.

Where do you get a custom stock from & what sort of price are you roughly looking at?

Thanks

I had it made to fit from a guy called Matt if you punch in XTX air on google he has a link to his contact details there and also a gallery of some of his work ;) the length of pull and thumb up grip made to fit me ;)

As per risingfriends post above you do indeed tend to see a lot of 97's and TX200's often in custom stocks and gotta say used to great effect in HFT but that's not to say other boingers on the market can't compete / achieve good results aswell

I myself also have a 97 sfs s2 tuned in 177 it's the just the person behind it that needs more practice

I'd say any of your current spring rifles would suffice... From what I remember you have a selection of top hw's. The rifles mentioned above will hit kills zones all day, but if you won't then there isn't any point splashing out for such 'quip.

Your 95 will do you justice as you know it and it's trajectory etc. As you get more consistent and feel like your out performing in your rifle, upgrade. I use a 98 for hft as an end point.

Use a rifle you are completely comfortable with and practice to perfection with it, for a true answer  .

I've won a few local HFT Recoiling Class competitions with my .22 HW77 in the past. This pedigree spring rifle has been the pace-setting target spring rifle for decades now, inspiring many copies and lookalikes along the years. But nothing can hold a candle to a well sorted '77...except a well-sorted HW97!. Mine is well up to to the mark of accuracy and performance the HW77 has become a legendary air rifle and it will outshoot me anytime. This year I'm going for a number of competitions, not just with my HW77 but also with my HW97K. .177 as it's really been tuned and refined to an awesome degree by a great pal of mine here.

As with any quality spring, Air Arms or Weihrauch air rifle though, the accuracy needed for HFT is no problem for them. But, it's down to your techniques for shooting with it that make or break the rifle's performance downrange. You have to shoot very correctly to shoot well with a springer!

Thanks for all your comments guys, some very good points made and advice given.

Today I've spoken to Tony at SFS and have ordered myself a HW97 Blackline with 2nd stage tune, I've opted for it in .177 as it's a trajectory I'm more familiar with.

This will be the rifle that I use for HFT, I'll top it with a MTC Mamba scope, 4-16 x 50mm and that should be a pretty good set up.

Then all thats left to do is practise, practise, practise... until I know the rifle inside out and to the point where I'm getting some nice, consistent results.

Might have to sell a couple of my other rifles to clear the way for my new arrival, could take up to 10 weeks until she's ready.

Keep your eye on the for sale section as I may be putting on some nice rifles over the next few weeks.

Might even see some of you on the HFT circuit in the not-so decent future.

Fine choice in the s2 sfs 97 mate and well worth the wait you will need to put atleast 2 tins through her to bed her in fully before proper accuracy testing with differing pellets, One advantage of sandwell is they will tell you which pellets grouped best on the 25y indoor range but i would push the range once bedded in fully what groups well at 25y wont always group at 45 yards. Also i would call Sandwell and ask him to set the power around 9.5 to 10ftlbs as once bedded in they tend to power creep this should give you plenty of room to keep you under the legal limit. Enjoy mate ;)

As mentioned before you can't go wrong with these guns.

This is my pride and joy which I have stripped and polished the Rekord trigger, polished the internals stuck on a 77 lami stock and adjustable butt pad.

It has the legendary Steve Pope V-glide internals which have transformed it from a great air rifle to a magnificent piece of supreme accuracy.

I still can't believe how good this little gun shoots.

Regards and all the best with your 97 when it arrives

Thanks mate, really looking forward to getting my hands on this one! All good things come to those who wait.. ;) I've always had pretty good results with JSB exact's in my HW's, but will be interested to see what they recommend, a new pellet choice may be on the cards! Thanks for the heads up about the power creep, i'd like it set more around the 11ftlbs mark.. think that would be sufficient to stay safely under?
