earth-thrower 494
Well lads, ive just learned about another 'big rat job',thats imminent up here (scotland), on the 'Shiant Islands' (Outer Hebrides).Interestingly Its " black rats " this time ! Probably, one of the last colonies,( some say the very last !) A large scale 'poison job' apparently. The expected 'funding' they are going to need for it,is not far off a, 'million' !! I dont know what stage its at, but any of you guys that are interested, better get your "price" in now. ha-ha-ha (and you better give me a 'shout' for telling you about it ! ) LOL Edited June 19, 2014 by earth-thrower Quote Link to post

earth-thrower 494
Lets hope it doesnt go to that 'New Zealand' mob, like the other one did...........LOL Quote Link to post
heritage 202
If the information is available on the net / forum you can pretty much guarantee that the wheels are already in motion...... The canna ( rabbits ) contract has only recently been completed but the initial invites to tender were sent out several years previous .... Quote Link to post

earth-thrower 494
I would be surprised if there wasnt any 'british pesties',who didnt have the capabilities, for this one.I wonder if its down to 'price' or 'expertise'.Maybe the 'new zealand' outfit, have got 'specialist experience', in 'island rat-baiting campaigns ? jack68 629
On most big jobs I find the little man will not get a look in no matter how good he may be, it's like trying to get a 14 year old kid not to wear cloaths from the market it's not going to happen they onlylooking at the brannded names...imo Quote Link to post
earth-thrower 494
Its a bit controversial this one. Some arent happy, that this LAST 'colony' ,should be eradicated. They have lived alongside the seabirds there, for a long time.Ive read that any 'predation' issues , are circumstantial.......Anyone with any thoughts,on it ? (and it aint only 'Antis',that are bothered !) Quote Link to post
Tiercel 6,986
Personally I would not like to see them eradicated, reduced yes. But I do not have to live with them. As you stated they have lived side by side for a long time. Eradicating them just on the hope that Shearwaters will breed is a bit OTT to me. Control the numbers by all means but what makes the shearwaters any the more special than the true British rat Ratus Ratus. Just my opinion. TC 5 Quote Link to post

In fact I was in West Wales (Skomer) a few weeks ago. I saw loads of dead Shearwaters, and they’d all been killed by gulls; you could actually see the gulls standing by the burrows, waiting for the Shearwaters to come back. None of the ecologist types there were doing bugger all about it on that island – not even shooing the gulls away. I don’t know much about this Hebrides island – maybe, on a global scale, the Shearwaters there are more important than the last of our local black rats – but, if this is just some scheme by a group of privileged do-gooders, to justify their own existence, that wouldn’t surprise me either. That doesn't surprise me the likes of the RSPB do a little bit but wont kill much vermin to help other vulnerable species Quote Link to post

heritage 202
I wouldn't have thought so..... If you look back at the origional canna post you'll see exactly the same thing was said there.... Credit where credits due,..NTS offered the tender openly to the one man band as well as the multi national company's both home and abroad...look at the outcome..! If would encourage anyone who may be interested to submit there quite as you knever know......nothing ventured nothing gained... Quote Link to post

I don't hold much regards for the tendering process. In some cases. They "Have" to get the process rolling in order to seem fair. A formality of such. Although the decision has already made. But hey. Your right. You have to be in it to win it. Quote Link to post
