Hawke Panorama - A Little Advice Please..

Recommended Posts

I fancy popping some new glass on a couple of my rifle's. So far I have been using cheap & cheerful Nikkon Sterling Mount masters, which to be fair have done a good job.

But now want to treat myself to something with a bit more quality.

I've done a bit of research and the Hawke Panorama range seem to get good reviews across the board & that's what I'm looking to get.

I have a couple of questions regarding this, which I hope you can help me out with:

1. What's the difference between the map 6 reticle and the half mil dot option and which one is considered to be more effective?

2. If given the choice, would you prefer the fixed option or the Adjustable objective (AO) Are there advantages/disadvantages to them both?

Once I have a better understanding of the options, I'll be putting in my order.

Thanks for your help.

Proper recommend the Nikon Prostaff series. The quality of optics is far better than any Hawke model, within reason, imo. You dont get 'that many' nobly bits though. Im hoping to get a 4 x 32 fixed for my 97 or maybe the 2 - 7 x 32... Old school duplex reticule too... none of this mil dot chit chat. Well built and solid. Also highly recommend the Falcon Optics models... Tad heavy but this works well with a recoiling springers such as yours, the Menace on top of my 98 works a dream, tactical turrets are good, with positive clicks.

Just got a Nikko Stirling MountMaster... no offensive but I think there shit to be honest, compared the models mentioned above. Wish Id never got it, spare of the moment buy.

Love ya honesty Rez., don't mix ya words mate! ha ha.

The mountmasters are all I know, once I have a decent scope to compare them to, I'll probably end up drop kicking them into a lake! ;)

Thanks mate, you've given me some good suggestions there. I'll do a bit of homework on them.

Once again some top suggestions there, you boys never let me down! ;)

I'll have a look into the MTC mamba lite, I want a step up in quality from my Nikkon Stirlngs but don't want to spend a fortune. I could do with 2 or 3 new scopes, so perhaps I'll try to get myself a deal if I buy them all at the same time.

Thanks again

Panorama mill dot is far better than map imo ,I had a none AO one and re parallax it to about 20- 50 yards , like a fool I sold it ,will be buy another one soon ,may wait until the side focus one comes out .

I have a few 4-12 x 40's with both 1/2 mil-dot and MAP6A. The MAP6A is a much less cluttered affair and provides stadia lines where the MAP6 has oval markers. The reticle is very fine, sometimes difficult to see in the shade but the blue ir is very effective. I mostly shoot HFT to reasonable effect and I value a decent ret over minuscule differences is glass quality. At 45 yards it's not the most important factor. Get the AO version; Hawke have a propensity to glue the objective ring so it takes Conan with a strap wrench to undo it.

I have just got a varmint and whilst the reticle isn't hanging it is a very nice reticle that I am slowly warming too and it's side focus.

Thanks Villaman & Pink or Stink,

I'm definitely leaning towards the panorama now in the 4-12 x 40 1/2 mil dot AO, I think it will be adequate for my purpose which is HFT & hunting. It also seems a reasonable price.

Like. Rez, I bought a Mountmaster on the spur of the moment and instantly was disappointed when I changed from a tasco 6-24x50 to a 3-9x50 Nikko. A week or 2 later I managed to pick up a used Panorama 4-12x50 AO and the optics are poles apart. I am no expert but just wanted to make sure you will be happy with the light levels on a 40mm scope. I've read a few people say they wished they'd gone for a 50 in hindsight. This isn't levelled at the hawke, just a general comment and I may well be talking out of my rear end, but in any case the Panorama was recommended to me and I wished I'd gone straight for one.

Hi Sanmarcopizza,

It's nice to hear another positive comment about the panorama! =)

I think you certainly make a valid point. The only reason I would choose the 40mm over the 50 is because I like the lower profile and find that my eye lines up better with the scope when its on lower mounts.

Hopefully I wont regret my decison... :cray:
