bill88 6
Thought i'd start this topic, after reading another post. Would it be possible for the mods to put a sticky up explaining how to cull a rabbit properly,or maybe even a video? I neck mine, and my lad and my brother use the old karate chop.I was lucky,as my dad kept ferrets terriers and lurchers,so i was shown how to do things at a young age,but some kids have nobody to show them how things should be done.Vermin or not,i think your quarry should be despatched as quickly and painlessly as possible, and there is a right way,and probably a thousand wrong ways to do it. richie 1
i was watching that documentary / tv show, on ITV2 last night, commando, on the front line. they had the recruits despatching rabbits, then skinning them. they were using the old bruce lee chop. the instructor had to do it twice as it didnt kill the first time and said that he was doing it again just to make sure. in my opinion the quickest way & most effective is the method of grabbing the back legs and the head to break the neck nice & quickly. richie Quote Link to post

byrney 2
I've tried the chop, I've tried necking but i prefer a preist. It kills first time and it can be done while the rabbits still tangled in the net. Quote Link to post
Guest Ditch_Shitter
For the second time in minutes tonight; I'm with Netman all the way. I can't stand seeing people ~ normally the less switched on ~ smashing away at a rabbits nrck. What's the point? Do these same people kick their own front doors down every night - or just use a simple key? First rabbit I ever ferreted, I tried to emulate what I'd heard. I held it up and 'chopped' it for all I was worth. Two or three times. We both ended up screaming! Both black and blue too, come to that. God alone knows how I even finally finished the poor thing off. I don't remember. Maybe that's for the best? Thank christ some older, experienced bloke happened into my life very soon afterwards, took me out and showed me how to do it properly. A swift, simple stretch whilst not even pausing in ones quiet conversation. How about TBF? Or maybe he could get ChalkWarren to do the honours to his filming? Both those guys have seen off a bunny or two, and TBF is handy with his camera too. Let these kiddies see how men who should be their idols do it Quote Link to post
Neal 1,916
Similar to someone above, my early attempts were using the karate chop, simply because that's what I'd seen being used. Then one day, while helping someone with some daytime longnetting I chopped one which then got up several seconds later and ran off; left me feeling a right plonker. On another thread within the last month somebody mentioned that to avoid using a priest when ferreting an alternative way of overcoming the fact that the rabbit is tangled is to pick it up by the back legs and give it a shake to release the head through the meshes. Guest MOLLY
Im crap. Just cannot get the technique right or am not strong enough, i try to neck them, it just leaves them stunned but alive, so i have to stand on their heads and pull their back legs MOLL. Quote Link to post
