Oooooot With The Mac.

Finally had it cleared to 1) shoot the farm field that work own & rent out, and 2) Take a buddy up on to the field. So last night it was pay back for Mac for all the time he's invested in me.

I went up to work early as they still only let me on site :( and I want to make sure I am still taking rabbits of the main site as well as the farm field. I landed around 11 and scared a couple of rabbits off the lawn right away. I made my way over to the nature reserve area and again spooked 4 rabbits so I decided to lay up. I was concentrating on the spot the rabbits come through the fence from the reserve when out pops number 1. The issue is he BELTS out, and runs to my 2 O'clock position, maybe 15 yards away. I freeze desperately thinking how the hell am I gonna get the rifle round on him without spooking him, when he then runs to my 4 o'clock position and no more than 10 yards away. Talk about dangling the carrot! I did my utmost to shuffle and pull the gun round, but manage to sit on a twig and that was him away. Thankfully he didn't go far, and I was able to find him next to a tree at 28 yards paced, with a nice head shot.

I had a little walk around the front but everything was skittish, clear night, no wind and all that. I'd already told the security guys that Mac was coming up (they have cameras all around site including out on the field so I had to let them know where I was going next). I decied to have a quick look round the back of site before Mac came. I spotted a rabbit near the bike sheds and stalked to about 30 yrds when he ran over the road and sat on some grass. I picked him up again through my scope but he was hidden behind a fire hydrant, all I could see was his fat arse! I tried to move but spooked him. I walked round to the back of the plant building and just popped my head round the corner, sure enough not 15 yards away was a rabbit busy having a wash. I put the scope on him too, pop, number 2 head shot over and out.

I continued the walk, having a quick scan over the field from behind the security fencing, I could see 20-30 sets of eyes, so pinged Mac to get a shift on. The other day when I walked the site with the HSE manager, he showed me a secret little cut that lead to a grass lawn. I decided to have a look down there, again just popping my head round the corner and again, rabbit number 3, 22 yards away, head shot, done.

I started to walk back to security to meet Mac when I saw 3 kits run across the service road. I had shot 2 pregnant does recently but 25+ males, so I had expected the females we busy underground. I left the kits to run off. We'll meet again.

I went to security and met up with Mac. He seen a couple run off when he pulled up and then my bag with 3 in so he was itching to get going. He was like a kid in a sweet shop when he lamped the field. Didn't know which rabbit to follow! I just let him go off on the first walk and managed to stalk a rabbit of my own to around 25-30 yards. Took a kneeling shot to the head and that was my 4 for the night. I was more concerned about Mac picking up a few than me getting anymore.

I'll let him tell you his adventure and bag, and as my personal photographer, he can post the best pics too. Suffice to say the butcher was happy this morning.

Great night out, a 5:20am finish was a killer though, and I'll be heading back to bed ASAP.

Was nice to pay Mac back, and I look forward to taking a couple of the lads up to say thanks for nights out on their perms too. And naturally, another night or 12 with Mac so he can chase the 1 (or 5) that got away last night.
