Lurcher Shooting Dog?

Recommended Posts

I'm not talking about a gun dog at all.

But I was wondering if anyone uses or has used their lurcher as a shooting dog as well.

With them retrieving to hand, potentially using them when decoying, deer stalking to follow up a clipped deer etc etc? It is probably older, semi retired dogs, but it does look like some of the collie crosses might be capable of this.

most are capable of it, they just need the opportunity. decoying, roosting, rough shooting, blood trailing, beating line, duck flighting you name it and they can be used for it, my old dog loves it, these were a while ago

That's exactly what I was on about, did he have a soft enough mouth on the retrieve?

I can picture a steady, quiet lurcher being a nice dog to have a long for a stalk or in the hide. Could save me scrabbling out and running a down a winged pigeon!!

Both my dogs work with the gun and know the difference between game ... If I shoot any feather or rabbits they retrieve nice and softly if I shoot a squirrel or rat etc they pick it up shake fukc out of it then retrieve it .............

pricked birds are brought back still breathing  he will sit and work in the hide or flush and retrieve when rough shooting, as socks said they learn what to crunch and what not to the same as with rabbits and fox's preban . keeps the old dogs going

Cheers, I have never owned a lurcher or had much to do with them. But I'll have a pup come spring. I'm looking now but haven't seen one that stands out yet.

It'll be a companion at work too, so hopefully with enough time together I can end up with a dog that does what I want it too, my last mongrel worked with me without needing much instruction, I'd love another to the same standard.

nothing more than bond and time doing it will get give you what you want from your dog, that old dog of mine changes his style dependant on what were doing, it all comes with experience and experience can only be achieved by getting out and doing it,

It is I am spending far too much time reading on here, a lot of information I wish I had access to as a young teenager.

I spoke to my old landowners and they all seem happy for me to come on again, put in for my SGC (guns are on my dads) and thinking about FAC, just got to find a dog to bring on and build into it.

Dusted off the Air rifle, was planning on an outing today but it will have to be tomorrow with the wind, the first time in a few years I have settled into one place so hopefully I can pick up where I left off 6 years ago :D
