Daz39 962 Posted January 31, 2014 Report Share Posted January 31, 2014 Plenty of rabbit willies last night, but no fluffy fluff... Up to work again for 11:30 and first things first…scope! I found a nice little place out of the way of the rabbits and zeroed the scope at 33 yrds, 2 slight adjustments had it bang on centre, off we go! In the security building I got the guard to scan the lawns with the cameras (Is that an inappropriate use of equipment??) to get an idea where the rabbits were, two good groups of around 5-6 in each at different spots on the lawn so I head out. The issue is, you can not get from the security building to the lawn without going through a pool of light, and as soon as the rabbits saw me, they were away, 50-60 yrds off but still I must have looked like a damn lighthouse walking across the road. I walked the front lawns and spotted maybe 20 rabbits, but all were away before I could get within 40 yrds. I was pleased to begin with, with the lights, as I didn’t need to lamp, now I wish it was a little darker! I decided to lay up near the corner, where I know the rabbits run to the nature reserve. I got comfy about 30 yrds from the run and waited. 10-15 mins later and the first fat rabbit came back out. Naturally he was about 30 degrees to my right, so I had to quietly shuffle round and bring the rifle to aim. He obviously heard me as he kept standing up, but couldn’t see me, flat out in camo. After what felt like an eternity I had him in the cross hairs and dropped him with a fast, flat 0.177 H&N FTT!! I waited another 5 mins but nothing else came out so I moved on. Nothing else was back out round the front, so I walked the back of the site. Again, 10-15 rabbits but incredibly skittish and away very quickly. I am starting to learn the runs and warrens and favourite eating spots, so I know where to look for them now. I managed to get another in my crosshairs, but he bolted a split second before I was ready to shoot. Further round I spotted a pair of rabbits on a fence line, around 30 yards away. Both ran instantly, one was slower than the other and paused, just long enough for me to scope him and take him with a standing unsupported shot at 25-26 yrds. 2 clean kills. Back round the front on the lawns and again, 10+ rabbits out, but by the time I got through security they were running away from my position. Again I decided to lay up, I found a grand conifer tree and a dry spot under it. I lay up and watched 3-4 rabbits eating about 60-70 yrds away, URGING them to come closer. Finally a pair did. I took a shot at one I thought was about 25 yrds away but I caught the flash of the pellet winging off in a very odd direction. The rabbit didn’t even blink so quick flick of the HW100 loading mechanism and re-scope, pop, rabbit number 3 rolls over on the lawn. The other rabbits ran, one towards some trees. I couldn’t see in the shadows, so I put the lamp on for the first time and saw the eyes, I quickly gave it 1 mil dot as I assumed about 45 yrds. I squeezed the trigger and saw the rabbit leap one flip 3 foot up and disappear. I thought I’d lost him, but as I collected the first rabbit, I thought I’d look to the spot the other one was and lo and behold, there he was laying peacefully on the deck. I looked back to my shooting position and thought, man that was a long shot. When I paced it, 48 yrds, single shot and clean kill. 4 good kills. Not sure how clear it is, but my shooting position to the middle tree, he was just by the stump. I carried on back to where the nature reserve is and had to lay up again. The rabbits took about 15 mins to come back out and I finally got one in my scope. I took the shot and watching the follow through saw a cartoon comedy moment, when the pellet literally gave the rabbit a hair cut! A puff of fur off the top of his head but he was away. I noticed that my scope was on a bit of a canter and I was closer than expected. I had another walk around the back, but it was 3am and time to clean up and go home. 4 in the bag, and a free haircut for a 5th. When I dressed the rabbits, all were male, the numbers out were lower and after the pregnant one last week, I am assuming the ladies are busy popping kits out. Time will tell. 4 Quote Link to post

I figure 20 rabbits in 3 trips, plus one more should be enough to convince them I'm not gonna take the piss. I stopped again last night when I could have gone on and got more. I begged for a shooting buddy but the health and safety bloke wanted to give it w bit before he said ok. I'm trying to get 3-4 shoots under my belt and ask again. 20 rabbits in 3 trips and I'm still not really trying that hard.
