If you own and run a Saluki based lurcher then first learn patience and understanding, then learn some more, then a bit more, its that simple?.

12 month old here..retrieves beautiful, like Jigsaw said ive not done anything different with this dog to that of my others..hes obedient, recall is A1, sits; lies even gives paws lol, jump anything,100% stockbroken..I ain't no genius at training mutts either..all I can say is there must be more bad owners of this type than the dogs themselves? Atb Andy

No Andy, I just think there are a lot of bad owners of Lurchers in general, just that the saluki blooded dogs are less forgiving than the others....

I keep both sorts pal, to be fair me coursing dog a peach, never needed a raised word with him even, just pure well behaved dog, walk him up town with no lead just odd prompt, even call um off cats or if he say chases a pet dog in park, very soft in nature he is, out a fiery line that's thrown a few reet twats, teat him exactly same as the pures, get em over road and let em off give em 10 mins to get the pent up feelings ran out of em, then start with recall back to me , never move until every dog is back in pack, then off we go, sometimes recall a dog and lead it up for a bbit then slip it back off, jumping etc they learn from following on, have mine out in field twice daily as pups, once with full pack and once with dam, use me garden to do odd bits of retrieve and 121 recall training, but I try to keep it simple, I don't need the dog to lay down sit or even retrieve, I try too teach all of these but will settle for good recall

too many forget these types hunt by sight mainly so when they ignoring you they more than likely still doing the job they bred for ie finding and then coursing game, and we go crackers when they don't listen, if we was half as good as them as finding game then we would not really need em would we, try scanning fields for hares with bino's you be stood there longer than a saluki with recall problem, the real problem is when said 'dumb' dog then refuses to come back to angry owner for yet another complete loss of control and kicking byu his owner, and they call the dog thick, now a collie well we all know he come back for kicking, and he called clever

saluki bred to hunt 121 with man in time before rifle, when the only need was food to survive in the most inhospitable places on earth, he was treasured for providing the meal that allowed the man the strength to get home to his family and feed them as well, no wonder a race of people who dislike dogs and see them as unclean make an exception for this type, and treated them as almost human, maybe that's why the dog has the arrogant streak, he was for many thousands of years our equal and sometimes our better, our survival depended on him and his ability

in a nutshell treat em right, form a bond and respect them and the effort they put up for you, make sure they get right diet and good kennels and conditioning for the job in hand, its team work and when one fails both fail, not just the dog
