Outlaw Pete 2,224
Okay. I didn't know what to call them. " Boxes " are for wild birds and budgies. Pans are what most of you, probably, hang in ye aviaries. So, what do ye call those little box / cages with a pan in, and a slide up door? Hang them on the outside of a cage. What ever. Those. I want to hear about them. I like them! Thing is, they seem to come in three types, yeah? Two are plastic and virtually identical ~ except exact colours and 50c difference in price. Something like that. The other is all wire. God, they turn me on! Spray painted gloss black, like my cage fronts? They'd look stunning! But, they'd also expose the sitting bird and, later, the chicks. Absolutely no cover in wire bars. Aha! But, then again; Nor is there with a nest pan, hung inside the cage front, or off the back of a cage ..... My experience with ringing wild nestlings tells me a nest pan inside is the worst possible option. Getting unseen chicks out of a pan, close to the top of the cage? No. I'd rather they were available without me needing to contort my wrist. Middle, side doors with external 'boxes' seem my best bet. All my cage fronts have these doors. What sort of 'boxes' do I use? Opinions, please Thankyou.

fireman 11,533
I've used a wire type of those before and they do give you plenty of access to your chicks,i also just cover them in a bit of artifial xmas tree to give then hen a bit of privacy. Some blurry pics(paulus will understand )of some greenie mules i bred a couple of three odd years ago in a cage nest.

fireman 11,533
I'm not a canary man so can't really comment but a native finch wouldn't really want to nest in a covered box like those stig,i had a camera box up all last year nest panned out etc and they chose to build their own nests in the cover. This year i'm goint to wire the sides and open it up more and it'll be set up in a bully flight as there more likey to use it than the other finches i have. Outlaw Pete 2,224
Stigly; Like all nest boxes and such, it's down to the preferences of the species. Put those boxes up in the wild and ye'd likely get robins and wrens using them. Tits and finches probably wouldn't though. Canaries are, of course, finches. But, as has been indicated to me else where; They're so f**king domesticated, they're like Dogs. They'd best in the palm of ye hand, if ye held still long enough I'll get my 'Cage Boxes' and try them out. My wild bird nest recording and ringing experience should stand me in good stead too. I don't emit around a nest site
