Beardie lurchers

Recommended Posts

I had a first cross bitch out of Marc H Glens dog Sheamus, she was a cracker, one of the fastest little rabbit dogs Ive ever owned, a real natural. She was out of a proper working beardie dog put to a tested greyhound which always helps

Something I often wondered SJM, :hmm: Marc H. Glen was doin some great articles in EDRD a few years back, really enjoyed them, always seemed good, honest accounts? Had one hell of a training programme for that pup he bred and wrote about, was that Sheamus, as I don't fancy trawling through all my back copies! Then he stopped writing.....What happend??

Im not sure what happened to Marc H Glen, I certainly dont think he stopped hunting, I think he just lost interest in writing and dropped out of the scene. I have a pic of Sheamus somewhere, I will dig it out, he had a racy body under the coat and he used to shave him in the summer :D

yes also got a 3/4 grey x 1/4 beardie collie bitch DH bred, shes 4 years old and is 23 1/2 inch tts.she does rabbits well on the lamp but likes to stalk squatters which ends up with alot of missed rabbits .her retrieving is poor very rarley to the hand but always to about 20 ft away(probabley down to my training ability) but not getting her till she was 14 weeks old made her lose around 8 weeks of early training and socialising so that didnt help either. feet are good but i was unlucky for her to brake her toe two years ago by just steping down a rabbit hole whilst just out mooching one evening and she has only had one bad cut.her coat is also good but takes some looking after as she lives in the house. as a ferreting dog she is ok but she does not have that extra gear unlike alot of 3/4 breds to take day time hares pre ban ofcourse and she wont do fox . she does lack preydrive but maybe that is because she comes from non working parents but i honestly dont no so i couldnt comment on beardie lurchers from working stock.what i have found is she learns quick and forgets quicker which is annoying but still a clever dog and a nice looking one to.as for having another one i wouldnt but each to there own all the best.

Hi Rew, is your dog out of David's stud dog Magregor?

I had a sister to Magregor that in typical Beardie style took a while to mature. She was incredibly intelligent, hard working and tough. She took all game from Munties to Fox. She would also take the occasional Hare but, only when running doubled up with my other bitch. As a ferreting dog she was outstanding, always spot on with her marks and rendering the ferret finder virtually redundant.

Her retrieving was always spot on, in fact she was fanatical about it and would carry back anything I would through for her, even house bricks.

She had the best feet I've ever seen on a lurcher and a great weather proof coat.

The bond I built with her was incredible and I miss her with all my heart for she would have killed herself for me.

The Beardie half cross I have now, also from David Hancock, is quite different in that she has already matured into a very calm and collected little dog. She has all the attributes you'd expect of a Beardie half cross, good feet, coat ect. Shes also one of the fastest lurchers I've owned, something you wouldn't expect of a first cross.

All this bitch wants to do is work. She has a very high prey drive and on our early season ferreting forays she has proved to be totally reliable with her marking. She is intelligent but, in a different way to my old bitch. Don't get me wrong she learns super fast and seldom makes the same mistake twice but, shes not bothered about learning the tricks I like to teach, she seems to be board by them but, hay she still young yet.

I've already built an incredibly strong bond with her and laugh if you like but, we seem to communicate almost telepathically when out in the field.

If she has a down side its that she a little shorter than I wanted, she stand a gnats cock under 22tts but what she lacks in stature she makes up with enthusiasm.

Would I have another one? you betcha!

owned a half cross beardie bitch that was a good foxer and bred a 3/4 to a greyhound out of her.good clever dogs a bit to sencertive for some but the bad thing about both was the coat was to thick and they both struggled to lose heat after a run and would suffer like wise .unless you lamped in a good stiff freezing wind the they couldnt lose heat quick enough.just look at all the pics of beardies in mags ,books net etc they all have thier tongue lopping out.a coat like that is fit only for a huskie to warn for british weather.
