Nik_B 3,791
Well I don't think anyone thought it was safe, in fact it's quite the opposite which is why they haven't been building nuclear plants for years people equate nuclear power with nuclear bombs. France gets around 85% of it's energy from Nuclear so not having it here is kind of pointless as if they had an accident we'd get all the effects anyway. Chernobyl deaths are hard to calculate because there was mass abotions of babies but from what I've read it's not anywhere as high any most people thing. The main type of cancer is Thyroid cancer which is one of the easier ones to treat. Basically what I'm saying is that while there is always a risk, the odds of a Chernobyl accident are basically zero and the Fukushima plant accident is yet to account for significant deaths. paulus 26
my beef with nuclear power is why build something that you are incapable of disposing of the the waste from, all you are doing is passing a potential problem onto future generations/ something i doubt they will be grateful for, in my book nuclear power would not be an option until a way is found to make the waste products safe within an acceptable time scale, in the meantime open up the pits get britains back working
WILF 49,817
The gamma source we used had a half life of about 30 odd days, we could get upto 5 years in prison if we let anyone within a 100m of the exposed source, the waste from a power station has a half life of about 8000 years......stand too close to that and it will burn you to sinders as you watch!!! You can also ingest Alpha particles which are more dangerous than the gamma. You can't touch it, taste it or smell it but its killing you all the same.....there f**k all clean about it believe me
Nik_B 3,791
Yeh but the idiots in power got hysterical about coal and fossil fuels in general, they allow political backlash caused by greenpeace etc to influence their energy policy which is supposed to be long sighted. Now we are seriously in the sh*t and are facing an energy crisis. Coal and gas should play a significant part of where our energy comes from.

hily 380
those in power back in 60's and 70's wanted nuclear could it be that money was involved and big building contracts would be had surely not. The people said NO to risky so whats changed bit by bit the gov got on the green band wagon and now fossil fuels are nasty and wind turbines do nowt for us so we are brainwashed into thinking we don't have any option but to go nuclear. All we have to do is put another shovel of coal on the fire and get warm lets get thinking the same way as the rest of the world and worry about hear and now not what could happen in the next 100 years or so.Nowt wrong with the I'am all right Jack attitude in my book. .Or does nuclear = more profit

We are phasing our coal fired stations out to comply with EU legislation.. Germany are currently putting the finishing touches on 5 massive new ones.. Beggers belief. We have about 500 years worth of coal left in the ground, a lot of it is some of the cleanest burning coal in the world, yet we are led to belive we are forced to rely on foreign oil and gas to power our energy and pay through the nose so we can be 'green..' Have a look at some of the people who benefit from the green cult....Nick Clegg's wife and Camerons father to name just two.
