Children In Need

Recommended Posts

What you think of it? Personally I can't be arsed with children in need or comic relief. Not so much the actual causes but the rich waste of space, so called celebrities patronizing us into giving money. Wasn't terry Wogan and the lot getting paid for it until it all came out? Shower of hypocrites if you ask me.

does any of it go to the underprivileged and sick kids in the uk ? I`m doing a fund raiser to help buy a young girl a home dialysis machine --- I don't mind but why ? shouldn't these be readily available ...

I honestly don't know mate. Up here we have another charity called cash for kids, I think that goes to local kids etc but children in need, I've never heard anyone benefit except what's shown on the actual program.

There's an advert on radio Scotland the now for children in need. Some scheme for kids in govanhill Glasgow, some play area. Presenter asked an 8 year old how he liked it. Kid says yea, they have rules you have to follow. Presenter, what rules. Kid, you can't bring in shotguns  honest to f**k, just on radio there, only in Glasgow

Take from Wiki...... makes you wonder....

Although Children in Need is welcomed by a large proportion of the British public, there are some who offer an alternative view, that the portrayal of children, particularly disabled children, as victims is unfortunate and counter-productive. It is argued that a change in social attitudes will benefit the disadvantaged more than money and public sympathy.

In November 2006, Intelligent Giving published an article about Children in Need, which attracted wide attention across the British media. The article, titled "Four things wrong with Pudsey", described donations to Children in Need as a "lazy and inefficient way of giving" and pointed out that, as a grant-giving charity, Children in Need would use donations to pay two sets of administration costs. It also described the quality of some of its public reporting as "shambolic".[22][23]

In 2007, it was reported that Terry Wogan, as the show's host, had been receiving an annual honorarium since 1980 (amounting to £9,065 in 2005). This made him the only celebrity paid for his participation in Children in Need. Wogan, however, stated that he would "quite happily do it for nothing" and had "never asked for a fee". The BBC stated that the amount, which was paid from BBC resources and not from the Children in Need charity fund, had "never been negotiated", having instead increased in line with inflation.[24] Two days before the 2007 event, it was reported that Wogan had waived his compensation.[25]

There has also been concern about the type of groups receiving funding from Children in Need. Writing in The Spectator, Ross Clark noted how funding goes towards controversial groups such as Women in Prison, which campaigns against jailing female criminals. Another charity highlighted was the Children’s Legal Centre, which provided funding for Shabina Begum to sue her school as she wanted to wear the jilbab. Clark pondered whether donors seeing cancer victims on screen would appreciate "that a slice of their donation would be going into the pockets of Cherie Blair to help a teenage girl sue her school over her refusal to wear a school uniform".[26]

I agree and never give money two those two charities. If I want to give I will, I don't need some penis on the telly to tell me what to do. What really gets my goat is the way schools are now in on it, the kids don't like to be seen to be different but I don't want to be steamrollered in to having to give them money.

I don't give money as every charity chief drives around in big flash cars etc, not how it should be.

I have however donated a lot of my time to disadvantaged kids through various voluntary organisations from young offenders to activities for the disabled and it is the most rewarding thing I've ever done.

Mainly it starts with an awkward first session etc as the kid doesn't really want to be interrupted from their xbox or whatever but once they realise they can talk to you and open up you get a connection and really do make a difference even if it's just to give them a break from the life they are in and to show them a different side of life. To encourage and mentor a young person, show them that there is so much more to out there if they want to explore positive avenues or just providing support to a child that otherwise would not be able to experience something without your support, supervision and encouragement is deeply rewarding. Even had one young offender come and give/be the support for a day at Riding For the Disabled and the confidence they gained knowing they'd help make someone else's day and realising they had their abilities to do anything they wanted without the support needed for the disabled child switched them over night. The last I heard they were still volunteering for disabled support days.

My mate's 6yr old lad is really into the ways of the world and wants to learn all about nature and what not. My mate's all about golf and the pub so I've started taking his kid with me for dog walks, identifying trees, bugs, birds etc and how it all fits together - he went bananas when he saw his first deer. He wants to come fly fishing next time after seeing fish rising on the river and asking what they were doing.
