Anyone Give Their Dog Supplements ??

Recommended Posts

When I worked with Greyhounds (long time ago) they used to get glucose in the breakfast. I couldnt see the point of this because when i took it myself i only got a burst of energy which soon burned off,so I stopped using it on my own dogs. When a deerhound/grey bitch i used to have got bad cramping after a gruler I gave her electrolites BEFORE and after coursing which cured it. This bitch was trained and fed the best. She had a massage every day wether running or not,but the supplement did the trick for me. The day the hunting act came into being she coursed and killed two Hares. The point is that unless you have experience of supplements and keep learning you cant gain knowledge. Getting yourself a set of opinions and closing your mind wont help your dogs health or performance.

yes a good electrolyte, replaces, the lost energy, and helps to stop cramping, Glucose= helps promote the rapid uptake of salt and gives energy fast, potassium= vital for replacement due to losses f

Cod liver oil everyday for joints and bones they get all they need if fed right

so electrolytes are a mixture of water, glucose.potassium and salts, giving it before i sort of understand as at worse it will do no harm but to add something that is part of the reason afterwards im sorry i just cannot get my head around, glucose and water are missing i agree but sodium and potassium are already causing a problem so why add more :hmm: i have had experience from EIC to full blown rhabdomyolysis over the years and have researched the subject quite a bit and still can not find a good scientific reason to add anything other than a good diet and to keep the dog as fit as possible coupled with the common sense of not running when its too hot and knowing when to give the dog a break,

where the fook are you going to find hot water at stupid o'clock in the morning in the middle of nowhere  , dogs will drink wherever they find water when out and about very difficult if not impossible to stop them, yes it can be worrying, i once walked through a field in the dark and rain that had been sprayed that day with good knows what, i ended up in A&E and the dog in the vets imagine if the bitch had drunk water out of a furrow in that field :icon_eek:

Paulus I don't use supplements unless you can call glucose and recharge that? :hmm:

as i said i understand glucose both before and after a run as its what fuels the dog and its whats deplenished after a run, i understand the potassium and sodium in recharge before a run but not immediately afterwards as the dogs blood is already overloaded with them

i use cod liver oil tablets all the time

i did try evening primrose tablets but couldn't see any difference but the same as cod liver oil theres nothing in a daily tablet or spoonfull that would do any harm and might indeed do some good.
