Last Night On New Permission.

Recommended Posts

Took the wee whippet out for a shine last night on a new bit of ground i've got.

I had a look at it last week and there's so much ground and thousands of rabbits on it. On most of the areas it was impossible to send the dog down the beam as there were just too many rabbits. It's all open fields but full of small hills and gullys and every time i went over a hill there were loads more in the gullys with warrens everywhere. Evereywhere i scanned with the beam was just heavin with them. Managed to give him a few slips and he managed 9 heathly bunnies.

So went back last night for a better look and hopefully a decent night. Parked up, went out and done the 1st few fields and managed a dozen.

Moved on to the another area and managed another dozen. He got 2 healthy rabbits then another 4 from the 1 area that had myxi so they got tossed in the burn. He then got another couple and when retrieveing them he ran over the top of a squatter, dropped the rabbit he had and went after the other and missed it as it just dropped down a hole. When i went to get the 1 he was retreiving it had f****d off down a hole also haha...this happened twice. He then got, i think, another half dozen so the tally was 24. Tossed 4, he dropped 2 while retrieving and came home with 18. Checked them in daylight and there's another 2 with slight signs of myxi so 16 are healthy.

That's the best night he's had. His previous best was 10 though this is the 1st time i've been able to put decent numbers in front of him. Don't think he could've went any longer as i noticed he started to tire at around 20 but i did push him a bit and he managed another few so well pleased for a wee whippet and all in 3 hours...cheers

Good going that lad nice when your permission has enuf too get a dog knackerd and love places that have little gullys and hills everywhere always seem too hold better and get more runs then flat arable/dairy land

Aye mate. It's top ground. Ye could be in 1 gully running a few and 50 yards away in the next gully they don't even know you're there and it's like that for miles. I never even scratched the suface of the ground that's there. Also, there's no trees or bushes so all the warrens are out in the open. I've never seen anything like it. There's a long hillside about 200 yards long and maybe 30 yards high. I went over the top, flicked the lamp on and there was hundreds of the f***ing things. It was like mass exodus as they headed for the warren on the hillside which had hundreds of holes. He managed a few of the squatters. Looking forward to daytime moochin with the dog and bolting for him. May be another dog on the cards soon now i've got the ground

Not 100% sure yet mate. The whippet's 21 1/2tts and is decent enough for bunnies and can turn on a 2 bob. He was spot on for that ground i was on last night and didn't give them an inch. Probably something a bit bigger at around 24tts...1/2 grey, 1/4 whippet, 1/4 collie or beddy or somthing like that. Also thought about a Hancock or MB whippet. You see so many nice dogs on here that puts a spanner in the works ha. Not been back at this game long and seen some decent dogs with things in them that i've liked. The wee whippet is amazing to watch though...they're electric off the mark and turning so i've thought about trying to get a collie/grey or beddy/grey and put him over it to get a pup from that. I've got 2 pet dogs also so still unsure. I'd have 10 if i could get away with it haha

Cheers. Amazing to see the wee dog do so well. He was mad for them and gave 100% doin some suicidal stuff. A few close 1's with rabbits going down holes and him doin somersaults and rollin all over the place when he grabbed them. I can now see why some dogs snap their necks and get bad injuries. After about 20'ish I could see him picking his runs which was a shock to see as he'll run at anythin no matter how far. It was all fast and furious and he was all over the place with them in a short space of time which was definitely the hardest shift he's had so it's understandable why he was knackered.

great stuff that mate. i am picking a whippet pup on thursday and looking forward to my hunting trips with him. reading your post has just made even more keen.

Cheers mate. They're fantastic wee dogs to watch. Just when you think a rabbit has got away they're right on its arse again. Their take off speed and turning is magic to watch. He's my 1st running dog and to watch them chase a rabbit all over the place, back flip with it in its mouth, retrieve it from 100+ yards away through fences and burns and drop it at you feet still alive is magic. Loved every minute. I'm hoping his stamina will get better now that can work him harder.

Aye should do mate. 1 thing I will need to do is up his grub. He's been out 3 times in the last week and is just muscle, skin and bone. I can even see a difference in him from yesterday after his run last night. He eats like a horse as it is. I suppose the more and harder the work, the more grub.

hes doing a good shift. the only thing i will say about pushing him is you dont want to do to much of that as you may find the dog will eventually chose every run he has from the start of the night. the correct rest along with plenty of decent grub is equally important to keep his fittness good.

its all good and well pushing dogs hard but it isnt long before the cracks start to appear. you can run them hard but be sensible with it and have many a good night out.

Good points mate...cheers for that. I have been thinkin about it a lot today and I certainly don't want to burn him out or put him off as he's not long turned 2. Thinkin about it...sometimes few and far between can be as good or better than too many. I'll just need to be aware of how he reacts. I can mix it up as there's loads of places I know of where he has to work hard for only a handful.
