Old picture the dogs about 10 now ,ive never called it a fell but i suppose it fits.

Wxm has the exact same idea of patterdales, fells and lakelands as i do. the pictures you have up of each are what i would be calling any of them if i saw them. people on here keep referring to fell terriers of old as black dogs... copper coin springs to mind straight away as a prominant sire of alot of working dogs on the fells of by-gone years and he was far from black! Red and black and tan fells were used or so documented history tells us.

yup i live less than a mile from where copper coin was bred and lived, as well as some of the best and imo most influential breeders of fell terriers.

i think a lot of all this boils down to just a name like you have said,

like most i would call a smooth black/red/choc dog a patt a rough black dog a fell and every thing else be it wire or smooth black and tan rough red dog would be a lakeland but its all a name at the end of the day.

me and my best mate have very heated discussions about this topic and i dont think their is a right answer. as long as they do their job ime shure 9 out of 10 lads would call them "dogs"
