Introduction Of Pups

Recommended Posts

alright lads,

had my dog since he was 4 months old (1st one) he is now coming up 12 months, still very puppyish, sometime he'll push it other times a delight. Much more obedient as a younger pup.

Anyway I'm thinking of bringing in a 8-12 week new pup..

When do you lads think the best time to do this is? and what are your good/bad experience in doing so??

Straight away, but don't leave them alone make sure your watching and ready to intervene if the older dog gets a bit too much. They should be fine I've never had any bad experiences from doing so, apart from the pup getting a telling off from the older dog but that's natural and it's just the dogs way of making the pup know its place. Hope this helped. Atb

Id concentrate on the sapling you now have,it will need all the time and effort you can spare for its education without the added burden of bringing on another youngster.

Are you desperate for a new pup ? the season is starting soon and your pup is a good age now and it will all get hard work with another pup around

I don't think its that bad mate..

Youngest one will be ready to enter next season and first one should be up and away knowing its job...

I don't think pups are that hard.. Shorts walks by themselves bit of basic work..

Two young dogs of the same age yeah but being over a year apart not to much hassle..

I would keep them separate supervised play in the house and garden..

Separate walks big dog will just skittle a young pup.. Happened to me on a few occasions..

I you think you will struggle, just concentrate on one.. I am lucky my lass, will walk dogs and play-train pups..

Once they are older I don't let her get her hands on them tho ..

Haha yeah ill agree with when they get older and women don't mix !

I've got 2 here that are a year apart and when your oldest is still a bit immature it leads to alot of play fighting and so on, like you say, just takes more time with each one

is there any desperate rush to get a pup? your other dog is your first dog so why dont you just spend the winter learning from each other and getting the work to the dog. a puppy around will distract the older dog, and the pup will also focus on the older dog instead of you if if is getting attention from it, wait till your big dog is older or you could end up with two spoiled dogs if you are still a novice yourself
