Deerhound Lurchers

Recommended Posts

I know there have been a few threads on deerhounds and deerhound x greyhounds in the past but you never see too many bitza lurchers with a good percentage of deerhound in them.

I put a post up a few weeks ago about a litter that a good mate of mine was expecting, 27" Deer/Grey x Collie Grey over 23" Deer/Grey x Whippet. Good breeding on both sides and both parents are good dogs. A few lads were concerned about litter wastage with having the 2 extremes of deerhound and whippet in there. Each to their own.

Anyway, Ive been offered a pup from this mating and Im going to see them at the weekend. Nothing set in stone yet but I do like the sound of these. I was going to mate my bitch next year and take a pup from her but like I always said, if the right litter came up, then i wouldn't breed for breedings sake.

Has anyone got a bitza lurcher with a bit of collie, whippet, beddy etc in there along with a good splash of deerhound blood? How did they turn out?

Cheers

Gaz

I arent into breeding mate, never had a litter in my life. I was only going to breed from my bitch to save buying in a pup from dogs that I know nothing about. I like my bitch, shes a good honest dog

Got a bitch of similar breeding at just under a year old. She turned out at 23/4 " TTS. I will put some pictures up when i get home but im very pleased with her.

Very chilled out around the house but one hell of a prey drive. One of the most intelligent dogs I have ever worked with.

As I said, will put some pictures up when I can

In my mind breeding for breeding's sake is just that bitch breaks down....whack a dog over her right reason or none.....and then worry about getting homes for puppies....be a nightmare situation that....

I would go for it mate sounds a good x keep ya breeding program on hold till a later date

I arent into breeding mate, never had a litter in my life. I was only going to breed from my bitch to save buying in a pup from dogs that I know nothing about. I like my bitch, shes a good honest dog and I have got a good stud lined up. But like I always said, if a mate or someone reputable had a good litter that took my eye then I would forget about breeding a litter.

Just rabbits for me mate. Obviously pre ban they would of excelled on bigger game. But them days are gone.

They are overkill for rabbits but certainly not too big. A bloke I know runs a 32" deer/grey on the lamp and he scoops bunnys up.

I once ran a 32"tts first cross during the late 80's on larger game and the only thing he struggled on was hare's,pre-ban of course,he took a bit of yardage to get up to speed but was a demon on fox.

I run a bitch with about 1/8th deerhound in her now,but she has a lot of beddy in the mix and a dash of collie, she's been a great bitch so far,4yrs old and worked 7 days all year round without a day off from injury, the deerhound seems to give good feet to their progeny as well as good coat, here's a pic of my current bitch, atb,WM

he suits me where he may not suit others he has everything I ask for in an alrounder ,good nose, good feet, good coat ,prey drive thats full on able to h/j/c and very clever the only down fall i have with him is he's an unsociable bugger who doesn't like strangers and the mother in-law lol but I can live with that

wirral countryman........great pics top class looking dogs

gaz............like wc (sorry i dont like that abreviation) i have said on here before my once in a lifetime dog from the early 80's was dg x cg and one of my current bitches has deerhound blood, laid back attitude, good coat n feet, plenty of fire if needed the only downside is their size, so for my logic it makes sense to have smaller breeds in the mix not all whelps will be big or small but get the right on and your on a winner

Thanks for the detailed and in depth replies folks.

W.C - Cracking photos and your current bitch is very nice indeed.

The laid back temperament will suit me down to the ground. I like a very steady dog that switches on in the field.
