Sandymere would it be possible that salukis have been in this country around the same length of time as arab horses, which came in at the time of the crusades around 900 years ago? If they could bring back horses, dogs wouldn't have been a problem. Also some of the earliest arab horses came in via spain, and I find it interesting that salukis and spaniels have similar ears and tails, maybe they weren't as strict, or observant, with their breeding policies at that time lol. I don't keep salukis or spaniels, but find canine and equine history very interesting, and you seem to know your stuff, so was just curious

up until relatively recently . they were allways given as very prized gifts .the first few in the u/k were gifted to I think military high ranks .. money never changed hands ... how times have changed if I remember correctly the first few came into the u/k from Syria .. hamma of homms and sarona kelb

The Romans were great courses and would have had access to the type and again may well have brought them to their European colonies. I know if I was to have a choice of the deerhound of 1843 and one of todays to take out on the lamp I'd go for the one pictured.

Interesting how the saluki hasn't changed as much?
