A sad note to everyone to advise them that our dear friend, Philip Lawton, Co Director of the Birr Fair and Arena Director of both Northern & Southern Fairs passed away on Friday. Philip extended his wide sporting interests to terriers, lurchers and especially whippets over the last couple of years but unfortunately he won't now have the whippet he often talked about acquiring.

Philip supported me in extending the prize fund for the terrier, whippet and lurcher events and last year I rather 'conned' him into getting involved in the Director's Challenge for Novice Lurchers. He initially volunteered a €50 prize but everytime I photographed him awarding prizes I volunteered even more money on his behalf until he was eventually caught for a €300 prize! Like everything in life Philip took this in good humour and even offered to put up a smaller prize this year. It is my pleasure to stand over this.

RIP old friend.

Shane,

As you know Philip loved mixing with everyone and he particularly enjoyed working with the Rosscrea group who he thought were 'a great bunch of lads' and he was the best of craic over the Director's Challenge as I volunteered more and more money on his behalf. Far from making him do the radio slots - he loved it - but he did sweat a bit before hand in case he didn't stick to the brief we prepared or that he was caught out on a question or two ! We had a lot of fun and his warm humour will be missed - characters like him don't come along too often.
