'brambledale' Bearded Collies

Recommended Posts

The only time I've ever heard of Beardies carrying the merle gene was in an article by Plummer in which he stated that they'd always carried the gene...

...this was about a year after another article in which he stated his aim to produce a strain of merle Beardie by adding merle Border blood to his Beardies. He went on at great length about precisely how much/little Border blood there'd need to be before they could be regarded as "pure" Beardies. Short memory eh! :whistling:

Yeah this lady has merles in her line, looks like they're fairly common amongst the working types. Only the show breds that dont carry the gene because of the very small number of dogs (no merles that I'm aware of) initially admitted to the breed club as the foundation of the breed. Wouldn't be surprised if the merles come from border crosses amonst the workers, tho it could have been there all along, beardies and borders will have common ancestors way back, no doubt.

You are correct ,....the Border Collie and the Beardie Collie are pretty much similar,...however, they walk a different path

I've never seen a merle working beardie in my experience of em.

there's one or two on the shepherds wi beardies website, and this brambledale lady had a litter out of her bitch breeze ( I think) that were all merles, her line started off KC Reg, but for the last 4 or 5 generations has bred only working studs in ( like I said the merles might well be a result of a border outcross on the working side or from the wider gene pool of beardies not allowed by the breed club in the early days when they set the standard for t he show type.

Any beardiex's out there available at stud to lurcher bitches?

Magpie on here has a cracker of a stud (you'd have to ask him if its available like) Galan its called, just do a search on the site for 'Magpie Galan' you'll see the dog, crackin picture aswell. 5/8 Beardie 3/8 Gh..Drew Pringle and Muirhead lines on the beardie side (real mcoy). There's a few more good uns on that thread too. I believe he has a full beardie dog also.

Aye, by way back I did mean way, waaaay back probably the middle ages or earlier there's been two distinct types, but they've had the occasional cross along the way too. But yes, totally different temperament and working style.

Has anybody ever tried a beardie/grey x. Terrier/grey? The bordercollie/terrier/grey was very popular when I was younger but only ever seen two beardie/terr/greys with the terrier being airedale. Made handy dogs back in the days

Fine looking dog chid. The ones I seen over thirty years ago were either airedale or irish terrierx's. They were of a similar shape to yours moreso the airedale x's. How do you think the dog compares to a beardiex? Or have you not seen a beardie grey without other blood. To compare? I do hope that dog works as well as he looks for you

never seen another beardie x work..

tbh he looks better than he works  ... he is only a rabbit dog and the odd hunted up hare, but a dog of his size and build should imo be able to do a fox (legal here) but he wont , will get into one with another dog but thats about it. not that it bothers me as he does just fine at what he does id love to try the same type of dog (or maybe even a pup out of him if i could find the right bitch) but with some saluki through it as i believe you'd get a great edible quarry dog
