Racing whippets

Recommended Posts

I have just got hold of a racing whippet for my mother n law as a pet. She is 2 years old and stands at about 22". All she has done for most of her life is sprint over 100 yard races. Had her at our local terrier, lurcher show at the weekend and ran her in the lure racing, fastest thing i think anyone had seen. How do they get on in the field work wise ie stamina, can they run a big eared rabbit or do they just blow up after a short burst. Also after running in straight lines will she learn to turn.

DONT WORRY MATE ABOUT THE WHIPPET ...... JUST GET OUT AND ENJOY YERSELF !

I REMEMBER AS A KID WHEN I THOUGHT I HAD READ THE BOOK BOUGHT THE T SHIRT ............. SAID TO A FELLA ...

" THEM WHIPPETS AINT GOT NO STAMINA MATE HAVE THEY ? "

WELL HE LOOKS ROUND AND SAYS ..... " I CAN GO OUT EVERY NIGHT THIS WEEK AND KILL 10 TO A DOZEN ....... HOW MANY CAN YOU EAT ??? "

KINDA PUT ME A MY PLACE , FROM A FELLA WHO KILLED MORE RABBITS , HARES AND DEER WITH A RACING WHIPPET THAN 99 % OF THE LADS WITH PURPOSE BRED LURCHERS

ALL THE BEST

MOST PEOPLE HAVE TUNNEL VISION WHEN IT COMES TO WORKING WHIPPETS,EITHER TO SMALL OR MUST BE SOOTY SAM LINES.SHOULD HAVE SOME CRACKING SPORT WITH HER.

This is my ped race bred bitch 19" tts 22lbs,has never caught more than 7 IN 1 1/2 hours.

She could probably get into double figures. She catches 40% of rabbits in by the hedge,Doesn't like cover.she is good sport as its non-stop twisting turning on quarry,WHICH PERSONALLY I ENJOY THE MOST,and no over shooting them.

This is my Coursing bred dog 21"tts 34lbs.Better instinct, stamina.works cover well.Better than bitch on strike.Reckon a race bred to coursing bred makes a better working dog.I think the stamina is common sense, due to the bitch having less body reserves to run into,Being smaller.

The only way to find out is give it a go  ........then you can at least say with some authority well this one was good or....its not for me!

I think most of us get a little blinkered wether its towards whippets or other breeds.........but its nice to stay open minded about things........

I know it depends where you're going to run it but i hope you don't get it smashed up for your mother-in-law :whistling: (i know i'm generalizing) :D:tongue2::whistling::D !!

I have found that if introduced to the rabbiting game,..slowly and carefully,..and not encouraged to hit their lure/target like a mad thing,..or 'geed up' too much,..the 'Hard Blood' specialist bred Racing Whippet is one hell of a useful tool... :notworthy: I like them,..I REALLY like them.....

Indeed,.my own new puppy,.'SKY' is virtually a whippet/greyhound type of thing,..with a wee bit of collie thrown in for good measure  I cannot wait to get her out and watch her sitting quiet on top of a warren :clapper:
