Gas/coal Fire Advice

Recommended Posts

looking to fit a coal fire in one of my spare rooms --- been looking at a second hand cast fire with surround earth and tiles -- mock victorian type ...but its a gas one -- question is this an easy conversion to coal ,anyone ever used one for coal , are they strong enough to stand the heat from coal, and can anyone see any problems converting --- cheers

From what i have seen it won't last 2 minute's unless it has been designed for burning coal..as the don't half knock some heat out especialy if it's open fronted..i know someone who is using what i thought was a multi fuel burner for burning coal..it must be a wood burner because the baffle plate inside is half burned away from the heat..

Mines meant to be multi fuel but the rear cast iron fire brick cracked after I burned anthracite in it about 1/2 dozen times.. Luckily it was less than 10 months old and I got it replaced free..

Don't forget Stig the chimney may need lining as the creosote from burning coal will perish the morter bed's in the origional chimney..which can lead to fire's aswell as carbon monoxide sneaking into the next room..
