Deerhound X (No Greyhound)

Recommended Posts

a well known local poacher of my youth had a deerhound collie, a really smart, well made, big strong bitch did everything you'd expect of a lurcher although single handed hare was more a war of attrition, but he lived in the country and the dog was used most days so it got plenty of practise

Half deerhound No greyhound

Thats how I am pretty much but I could never hunt my dogs in that kinda heat. They would most likely be dead in a hurry. But as far as the ground goes. I have never once even gave that a considerat

Not sure why you would want a deerhound X with no grey?

Yes, but why would a deerhound x collie be better than a deerhound x grey x collie?Yes, greyhound adds speed, but with that you get a more fragile hound. On the hill, a deerhound will outlast any greyhound, and due to being bigger, tougher, and more hard wearing will put more game in the bag.

Im far from the flat fens of Englandshire mate, Ive carried home too many greyhound based lurchers off these rocky hills. They are too fragile for me. Plus I dont need the speed that is needed on the low ground. To find and flush game up here a dog needs a bit of size, a good nose, a solid conformation, a good jacket is desirable and a tough robust body and feet that can run over these harsh rocky slopes. The game I hunt varies but mountain hare and boar are both common.

If someone bred deerhound/pointer or perhaps another gundog breed, that should suit my needs, I wouldnt say no to a deerhound/foxhound cross either.

All the best

You should try the foxhound crosses. Use a big 28 inch lampin dog over a foxhound gyp. You wont be disappointed if it clicks right.

The few I've seen could HUNT  Do you run any of this type mate?

Cheers

I could only imagine the stealthy brainy sort of mutt that would be mate. What sort of height? Cheers

I had a few of those old mentors myself mate, they really did get my young brain excited and every word and every lesson was just the most interesting stuff to me. One old guy was an expert taxidermist, and trapper, old time poacher and a real gent. Fond memories.

i seem to be picking up that a lot of these types were from long ago, have tastes in lurchers changed or are todays base deerhounds not up to it ?

I would never use a deerhound myself. I would use a dog that is more suited to what I do personally and the deerhounds I've seen aint gonna cut it here.

I run 3 dogs with almost no greyhound (1/16th grey). They never seem to break unless they get wrapped up in barbed wire, don't lack speed at all which surprised me. I don't like greyhound blood as the country I hunt and game I hunt will wreck one in no time.

What's their breeding?

They're bitsas. Irish wolfhound, borzoi, deerhound with 1/16th grey is the mother and two pups out of her to a ridgeback pit wolf deer grey lol. Was an accidental breeding but worked out ok.
