Gaoler 83
Hello All, I am looking at buying the above rifle in .177 for rabbit and pigeon shooting. I currently have the HW100 & Falcon FN19 in .22 but am looking for something different! What are your thoughts on the above rifle? also what will the trajectory be like .177? John... zini 1,939
I'm been an extensive user of this rifle in a tuned and un tuned form over the past 3 years off and on, having owned 2 of them and another HW97K. I also was out on a number of occasions with my shooting partner with his un tuned model. Its a very good rifle for the money and is more than capable of being used as a accurate hunting rifle. In my opinion its probably the 3rd best springer rifle straight out the box, only being maybe bettered by the AA TX200 HC and defo bettered by the the AA Pro Sport. Its on a par with the other great HW springer out the box like the and 95, depending on if you like a heavy or light weight rifle, break barrel or under lever etc. Where it does come into its own is after a tune by a professional tuner for either £70-ish or £130 -ish depending on which tune you go for. If tuned I would put it in first place, but only just above the AA Pro Sport (IMO don't forget) and I've own one of them too so can give a good opinion on them both. The .177 trajectory is brilliant for rabbits at night, being much flatter than the .22. Shot placement needs to be precise but .177 is a very nice hunting caliber. Si. 1 Quote Link to post
barrywhite 282
I have a few air guns some being pcps .I often use a 97k over a hw 100 both in 177 for rabbit shooting .If no rabbits show and I get bored I can target shoot at stuff and not have to worry about a refill of air .If I was forced to use a 97k over a hw 100 I would not worry I may prefer the 97k .no messing about with 97k stick in a pellet and let them have it. just jack 998
i'v had the fn19 and the 97 in the same caliber as your self, the fn19 was fine but the 97 was a bit wayward, but it was well over powered so a chap with a ticket took it of my hands and sorted it out but i prefer the springer if your busy Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,589
I concur all of Si's comments here. It is a superbly accurate rifle in .177. Or .22 as, I have shot with Si's Tony Wall-tuned .22 version which I found to be a genuine delight to shoot. But then, so is the untuned .22 KT synthetic that Davy has. My partner Helen shot several 2p coins off a block at 30 yards with that rifle on her very first day ever shooting a rifle. So the breed is not wanting for accuracy. I have the HW97KT in .177 which is currently undergoing tuning and refining work by a friend of mine here. As a general hunting arm, it is up there with the best of them out there, straight from the box. It will knock down any rabbit, rat or bird quarry as long as you do your bit in the process right. No question. Its trajectory will depend on its power output but. it is pretty flat and predictable in .177. It is fair to say, that, first impressions being what they are, it's not as accurate as a TX200HC .177; I have that rifle too and that one is a precision tack-driver that nothing in .177 I've seen surpasses...until we'll see what performance this 97KT I have, turns in after it's been tuned and honed to the level of perfection it is currently going through. I still maintain the finest, most accurate spring rifle you can buy, is the Weihrauch HW77. I have honestly and unbiasedly tested my .22 HW77 full length rifle against TX200s and Prosports and it has beaten the lot in genuine accuracy. But a well sorted HW97 is not far behind. I can honestly tell you. Pianoman 1 Quote Link to post
Gaoler 83
Hello All, Thanks for your advice HW 97KT Tuned from Sandwell or Air Arms Pro Sport from factory? is there any difference in build quality? John... Quote Link to post
Mawders 595
You can go straight into any gun shop and purchase a pro sport at the most it would take a few days to order in and is a tuned rifle straight out the box, awesome rifle. 97KT also a good rifle, not as good smoothness wise out the box but when tuned is reportedly at another level completely. Depends how long you wanna wait, SFS waiting times are currently very busy and don't expect to see it for at least 4 weeks unless you get lucky. Both awesome rifles. Quote Link to post
zini 1,939
Air Arms Pro Sport every time for stock, smoothness and build quality out the box. HW97KT once S2 tuned for low recoil, consistency and amazing to use. Si. Quote Link to post
pianoman 3,589
I think those last two answers from Mawders and zini are pitch perfect "Nutshell" assessments of the two rifles. Both are top notch sporters that will delight you with their accuracy performance Goaler. And if the Prosport was available to us left handers I'd have a pair in .177 and .22.
