My new apprentice...

Put pup in crate next to sofa, that way you can touch pup through bars in crate when it cries, to let it know its not alone. Make a nice deep nest of woolly bedding, hot water bottle instead of lurcher to keep it feeling warm and safe. If you give in to it's crying it has already learned that crying means it gets what it wants: not good.

Gareth, your signature is crap.   It doesn't say what car you've got, or if you use quilted toilet paper or even what toothpaste you use ..........   Too vague!     Pup looks pretty though lol

Haha you are a twat. Lol.   To those that are interested, he is silent in crate now. Slept through the night. Crys when he needs to empty himself.   Can't moan for 2 days progress.

Only took a few days. We put him in a crate in the lounge when we are eating and at random times to treat him so he sees it as a good place. Now when he goes in he does the doe eyed puppy face and sulks for 5 minutes and then he goes to sleep. He has his cuddly toys in there and a nice warm blanket. He also has a puppy wheat bag but that's because I'm too soft!

Thanks, done that.

How long will a new pup cry for before getting the hint? Its been 2 hours and he sounds like a pig being slaughtered

Don't leave him in ages he will just get stressed and associate it as bad, put him in for 5 then take him out n fuss him when increase the time in dont allow him to see your other dog out and about after a few times if he has even a minute quiet treat him, make sure you feed him in there too. If he sees the crate as a good place he will eventually get the pic, as you know they are clever dogs although very dopey lol, it will come with time, to be fair to mrs p I've left it to her on the same advice and it took 2 days and 2 sleepless nights but last night was quiet with the only issue he tore his puppy pad to bits lol. Good luck with it mate,

That was my thinking just, hes clearly getting stressed but obviously taking him out defeats the whole object and he has won.

As I type this hes just curled up and gone quiet for about 5 seconds before starting off crying again. So hopefully he will get the picture shortly...

Stick with it. Try to ignore that awful noise if you can and reward the good and he will get it. Another thing mr p does is rubs the bedding all over the puppy so it smells like him and is comforting. We also put a blanket over the crate so only the front is free as it makes him feel more secure.

I will cover the crate on 3 sides and top, ive heard of that before but never tried it, i guess it makes sence.

I've had some which settled almost immediately, and others which screamed blue murder for days and nights :censored:

The trick is to feed him in there: feed him, take him straight out for a pee after being fed. Play with him until he's tired, pee or crap again: make sure he goes before you put him back in the crate again. Give him something to chew on: a bone he can't swallow or something else to occupy him. Then he'll sleep for a bit: you breathe a sigh of relief, then he wakes up again, you go through the same routine, watch him like a hawk, the moment he wakes, take him outside for a pee, before he ever starts screaming. Then put him straight back in again. Ignore him if he screams. The most you should ever do is growl nastily at him if he screams, but only if you are sure he isn't hungry or needs toilet.

It is just conditioning: some pups resist it more than others, and some take longer to learn that there is no point screaming in the crate. Yes, you will get it wrong sometimes, and he may pee in the crate: some pups seem to need to go every 5 minutes, not really, but it seems like that. If he pees in the crate, get him out, say nothing, clean it up, put pup back in. Only ever let him out if he is quiet for 3-4 minutes before you let him out. Seems like a load of hassle, but it does work. Thing is to be consistent. Everyone in the household needs to observe the same rules and routine. Pup should be ignored while it is in the crate at all times: don't even look at it, unless to growl savagely at it.

The only pups I've had which have absolutely refused to be crated are Saluki types :icon_eek::laugh:

Cheers Penny.

I think im doing everything correctly. The missus is following the same routine too. As much as she wants to get him out and coo over him.

Hes had 5 minutes sleep then as he was waking up i praised him and got him out before he had chance to cry and took him for a pee.

Now hes back in the crate and its dejavu but not as noisy and hopefully wont last as long...
