Peeing in Crate

Some of you may of read my last thread about the crate training etc.

 

For those that didnt, very long story short...

 

Almost 12 months ago I took in a 3 year old lurcher. Unknown background.

 

Lived in kennel fine with terrier.

 

Her and terrier had a fight. Seperated.

 

Terrier runs off one day bushing. Never seen her since.

 

Lurcher started whimpering in kennel. Nothing serious.

 

I have week off work. Bring lurcher inside, spend loads of time bonding.

 

I go back work, lurcher back outside. Massive seperation anxiety, howling, crying etc.

 

I bring lurcher inside. In a crate. All is well. Except...

 

She pisses every single day. She was pissing every night but I've started feeding her at 7pm, taking her out to empty, and then crating her and taking water off her at 10pm.

 

Night time problem solved.

 

Today I walked her at 6am, fed at 7am, took out to empty and took water off her at 8am. Went to work. Came home at 2pm and she has pissed.

 

Surely an adult dog can hold for 6 hours?

 

Might it improve with time?

It could be a symptom of anxiety when you leave her. Do you put a blanket over the top of her cage? You could try leaving a radio on for her. My bitch used to pull her blanket out of her plastic dog bed and piss on it every day - it was easy enough washed but she used to lie on it and smell of piss. I threw the blankets away and left the plastic beds only - the pissing soon stopped.

Hello there. When she comes back from her walk how much does she drink? She then eats which will possibly make her thirsty again and drink more. By 8 that water will not be through her but possibly she will have too much to hold till 2. Yes she should be able to hold but in the kennel she was able to go when she wanted so hasn't realised she needs to hold on. Can you not feed her when you return at 2 or even at night. If fed at night I would hope that she will eat, drink and then settle down. If she wakes and needs to go before you get there then hopefully she will cry or scratch at the crate and you will hear her and let her out. You then walk her and she will empty herself. Hopefully she will then not take on as much water before you go and will be able to hold on.

Littlefish - I leave the radio on in the day and cover the crate except the front. I could remove her "vet bed" but its a metal cage floor so not very comfortable.

 

Stoaty1 - she doesn't drink much after her morning walk, some mornings she doesn't drink at all. She is fed raw so gets alot of moisture from her food.

 

I can appreciate that she has never had to hold herself in her kennel but is this ability likely to improve or not?

I wonder if you removed the vet bed and replaced it with a newspaper might it help. I use vetbed too, started this only within the last year or so, i know it really has to be saturated before it feels 'wet' as such?

Before i read that i have done similar.

 

I tried with no bedding yesterday, just metal floor and she still Pee'd.

 

So today ive folded the vet bed in half at one side and kitchen roll at the other side in pieces. so hopefully she will pee on that and its easier to clean and i wont have wet bedding everyday.

I have a Whippet that i got as a 1 year old in June this year. His previous owner kept him in a kennel where he could piss and shit any time he wanted so he never had the need to hold it in. My other dogs are kept in the house and i decided to keep him in the house also so he had to go from being able to piss and shit any time he wanted when in the kennel to having to hold it until i let him out. He did piss and shit a few times in the house but he soon got the picture that that was a no no and he quickly learned from me and the other dogs that he had to piss and shit outside. My point is....i think it takes time, not only for the dog to learn that doing the toilet in the house is not allowed but also to learn how to hold it in whether the dog needs to strengthen stomach muscles etc....either way, it takes time

Thanks for replies, she is definitely house trained and knows the score.

 

She will hold from 10pm untill 5.50 am (on the dot!) when she cries loud enough to wake me up, at which point i let her outside, she runs to the grass and does a Pee.

 

So she knows the score from that respect.

 

Its weird that she can hold from 10pm to 6am but not from 8am to 1pm.

 

Fingers crossed it gets better, but no worries if not, shes great in other respects.

Is the bitch speyed? i know some folks who have had problems with urinary incontinence in speyed bitches.......it can be a side effect.

Or it could be stress at being left: you say she doesn't cope well when you aren't there: being unable to control her bladder can be one example of what stress can do to a dog.

Littlefish - She isn't spayed.

 

Penny - I think you are right. I almost PMd you today to ask you if it could be stress related. She definitely knows its wrong and she can definitely hold for 6 hours easily (she holds every night).
