Crack in forend

Recommended Posts

I've had no luck with this shotgun. I've had problems with the safety/action and the other day it was ejecting both spent and unfired cartridges after only firing one shot and now I get home to find a 3 inch long crack down the side of the forend :censored:

Should I take it to a gunsmith and ask him to repair it or just try and get a replacement part? It is grade 5 wood so I'm not sure I would want to try and repair it myself.

I am so p**sed off about this gun...I'd have got rid but I shoot well with it.

Cheers

Nick

expensive to replace even if you can find a fore end to match your stock, a repair if done correctly is hardly visable

I'd go for a repair, but you need to find out what caused the crack in case it does it again to your repaired part.

Yeh I'd love to know!

I've used it mainly for clay shooting and haven't fired more than about 2500 cartridges through it.

Would not oiling the wood cause it?

Or maybe my cabinet is in a bad place?

Sure, could be either of those I guess, but until you find out exactly what caused it, you can't guarantee it won't happen again. Maybe worth getting an expert to give you his opinion on it before you pay to get it fixed.

I've had it a year and 7 months. Not very long really and it's not seen much shooting. Never been in the rain until last friday, I'd never really oiled the wood though until wednesday last week but that crack was there just before just smaller.

Just a quick question

Does anyone think it is dangerous to shoot with it again before I get it repaired/replaced?

Might have the chance at a days shooting next wednesday and I don't want to miss out.

Edit:Never mind...I'll just take it down the gunsmiths and see what they can do.

not unless you trap your finger in the crack and get a bad blood blister  the worst that can happen is it gets bigger of breaks completly

Just dropped it off at the gunsmiths he's going to glue it and do his best to hide it.

A replacement forend in grade 5 is 250 quid and I'd have to send mine away so they can match the wood.

This is what happens when you get seduced by nice wood and shiny things!! :hmm:

Just for your info, if it ever happened again, drill a hole through the wood, at the extreme tip of the crack, which in effect, cuts the crack and prevents it growing. You can then glue and clamp if not too big.
