Actually Jonny...Loads of fell and hill ground in England has been made into whats called ACCESS LAND. On an ordnance survey pathfinder map it shows as orange shading. On this you can roam where you please, dogs must be on leads, and there may be temp restrictions through nesting times etc. I was keepering on 12000 acres, of which the hill ground above the improved grasslands, were opened up as access land, but thankfully being in the most remote area of England it didnt make any difference.

Tony Blair's Labour government introduced the "Right To Roam" act, and it certainly included England ! But this law doesn't give anyone carte-blanche rights to do what they want on farmland !! I recently had an altercation with a farmer who leases land from the local council, and he tried the "threatening" route, then the "private land" route, but when I explained that I had checked with the landowners,(Newcastle City Council), he grudgingly admitted there WAS public access, but all his rights as a tennant were still in place, i.e. tresspass by damaging crops, tresspass in pursuit of game, etc ! After a long and heated discussion, he said he didn't mind me crossing the land, and we parted with a handshake !!

 

Just because there is a "right to roam", doesn't negate other laws.

Walking about with dogs is fine, on the footpaths untill your actually carrying rabbits..

 

Then your not a a innocent fell walker your a poacher.. Folk see lurchers and alarm bells ring straight away...

 

I would not advise rocking up to land, blind of local knowlegde.. You walk onto game estate and your in hot water

 

Been on some open accsses land and I was just walking with my other half and my dog. Dog was flushing grouse and hares, next thing the drone of a ATV in the distance its not worth the hassle a good lurcher will get you into trouble in the wrong places

Aye i agree matey, i really feel for you guys, blessed with some nice land to mooch about, but since the 'dales threads' on here, i'm sure it over run with fecking idiots. And it just makes them more hostile to the good lads with dogs.
