fitchet 788
Right after christmas im going to look at getting a GWP and just wanted to hear everyones opinions on them ? Im not looking for a picking up or beating dog all i ask is that it can find game for my lurchers and mark warrens and be steady to rabbits bolted to my shotgun. And im looking for a dog that can track wounded deer and It will be asked to rietrive duck and geese from time to time. My dogs perform alot of these tasks already but looking for something abit more suited to the job. Honest opinions on this breed please good or bad both welcome. Quote Link to post

AirgunGuy 362
I have a GSP and she has a great nose on her. I've always walked her in places where there's rabbits and other game and she can find them easily. 1 day i took her into a field at the back of a job i was doing and she headed straight for a patch over cover...she put up 8-10 pheasants all within 20 yards or so of me so had i a shotty i would've nailed a few. She doesn't mark warrens but she does mark bushes or small patches of cover if there's something there. She's never had any formal gundog or rabbit training...it comes naturally to them and she naturally hunted from a very young age. I did do all the basics with her when she was a pup and found her very easy to train. As far as stamina goes...there's not much about that will beat them. I could walk 5 miles and she'll run 50 without even batting an eyelid. She always runs and never walks and is always hunting for something. All in all she's a great dog...very easy to train and a great pet also. I'll certainly be getting another when her times up My 2 GSP's having a sniff at a warren. I sadly lost the bigger of the 2 out on the main road. Edited October 22, 2012 by AirgunGuy Quote Link to post
burnie69 376
I've a gwp bitch and tbh as a gundog or a allround mooching dog to work along side lurchers i don't think you get much better my bitch will track wounded deer i don't use her for marking because i have a lurcher what does it but if 1 of the lurchers retrieves a shot fox she'll always be helping carry it back. When my male wirehair ,certainly the smartest dog I've known, figured out what was going on. He found ways to get out of flushing rabbits for the awaiting lurcher. But as for work before, and after the shot. He's a staunch pointer, a hell or high water retriever, and blood tracks deer, and black bears. So, I forgive his jelousy. I hope you find this helpful.
