Hi there,

Have an 8 month old female pup. My male dog has just started to hump her he's never done this before. I had him castrated about 5 months ago (agreement with the wife if .... they had mated I would have been castrated as well)

Is this a sign she is coming into her first season or a dominance issue?

Cheers

Not yet but it been touch and go a few times. I do not like jealose husbands and they do not really like me. Any way do not worry dogs will be dogs nuts or not. The instinct is still there he just does not have the proper tools. You should count your viagra and see if the bugger stole any. Or lock them out of the room when you and you other half have alone time. Some dogs learn buy watching.

dominance,

but it can be dam Embarrassing

Correcting a dog in a harsh manner for humping is not necessary and can create problems worse than the humping. Work with the dog to develop several behaviors the dog will perform on cue, such as sit, down, come, fetch, go to a spot and settle calmly, go find a toy to chew, and any trick the dog enjoys doing for a reward.

hi this might not be relevent but dose the pup get liffted up higher than the dog very often ? dose this happen when you put her back down?

im asking because if you watch two male dog together for the first time one will normally stand taller than the other holding its head over the back of the other this in dog terms is the dog displaying dominance it can be so subtle that the human eye dose not see it but its like having a slaging match on here to the dog. i have a friends who has a jrt and a mungrel thing every time the jrt is lifted higer that the other dog it tries to hump it as soon as the jrt is put back down and as in your case its the castrated dog doing the humping as they can sent that the other dog poses a threat to it place in the pack . or dose it happen when the dogs have been separated for even the shortest time? as dog are consntly reafirming the place in the pack hence the rush to greet you at the door when you come home . :D

I dont really lift her too often

It usually occurs when they are having a play in the garden. The usual playful snarling and mouthing occurs then he just seems to get the urge. :big_boss: dirty bugger :big_boss: She did have a right go at him when he tried it the other day and he seems to be a bit better since .

(spent some time trying to explain to the kids he's just having fun not sure they believe me)

She is the FIRST one to greet me when I come through the door.

I reckon its far more likely her hormones are starting to kick in: doesn't mean to say she's about to come in season, just that she's sort of pre puberty and starting to smell different.

As you only had the dog done 5 months ago his instincts will still be very strong. We had a dog that had been castrated at about 5 years: he actually tied with one of our bitches when he was about 7 years.

I always notice that my adult bitches start paying an interest in the younger bitches at about 8-10 months, often humping them a bit and generally getting excited, though it could be another 6 months or more before the youngster finally does come in season for the first time.

I reckon it's partly putting them in their place and making sure they know their place in the pack, and partly cos the young one's hormones are starting to devleop more.

The bitch is probably showing its maturity and its scent is kicking in so the dog is reacting ,I would think, caught my big dog Inan, humping,my rabbiting dog Smoky,,he isnt gay just showing his dominance,I hope so anyway!
